Chipper #52 for the season, #1 for October (no pic)

Well, everyone makes a bad shot some time.

This young chipper was at ~27 yards and (I found out hours later) I hit this one in the side of the abdomen. Although I looked and looked for it seconds after the shot, I simply could not find it where I thought it would be.

A couple of hours later, I went back out and looked again. Because of the flies, I found it this time not far from where I thought it would have been. Passed through and entrails blown out on exit.

Did not have my phone with me to take a pic.

Not proud of this shot, but we all miss some time.

As usual, .177 Benjamin Fortitude Gen2 using CPUM 10.5 @ ~750fps for ~12+fpe. Scope is Aim Sports Alpha 6 4.5-27-50. Shot was seated with improvised rest.

No cigar for screwing up this shot.

P.S.

The chipper was quartering to me with left side exposed. I simply did not account for the strong left to right (gusting) wind. The shot hit between 1/4 and 1/2 inch to the right of where I was aiming.

At least that is the best reason I can come up with for missing my aim on this shot. Of course, it could have simply been me.

P.S.p.s.

Well, maybe it wasn't the wind. I just noticed that I can't adjust the barrel band to where the shroud does not touch it no matter what I do. This was not the case the last time I checked it, but I did fall off of my porch (took a header) with gun in hand the other day (morning of Sept. 20), so that may have done something. I did check the zero/POI immediately after the fall and all was good... then. But I started missing low and right recently and when I checked the barrel band, its position seems to account for the problem.

Don't know why it took over a week to show up, or at least for me to figure out something was wrong. Head shaker for me.

So, I removed the barrel band completely and so far, it seems to have brought back my accuracy/precision. Time will tell...

BTW, my security cam caught the fall/header I took, but I am not going to post it here. Too embarrassing. (smile)

Update:

I finally took a closer look and found that all four screws that hold the breech block to the gun were loose. Tightened all of them and now have the barrel band back on with no problems. Accuracy is back to normal as well. I feel a little stupid for not realizing the problem earlier.

I've got my fingers crossed that you have solved your problem as well .

Thanks! Only time will tell and tomorrow I should have at least one pesting target to test it! (hopeful smile)

BTW, the barrel band on the Fortitude is not intended to be a support structure for the shroud/barrel. It is only there to (hopefully) keep the shroud/barrel from becoming misaligned by some accident of force.

The shroud/barrel assembly is intended to be free floating although some people may claim that since the barrel is supported by the shroud it is not "free floating".

I disagree with those folks.

In fact, the shroud is supported by the barrel, not the other way around.

I would say we are about neck and neck for the year. There’s not many left, and they’re ready to sleep for the winter. The squirrels on the other hand are getting everything I’ve got.

52 is a lot of chippers. And they are small targets. Most are dumb, but once they get educated it’s an entirely different ball game.

I live in the Southeast, so my chipper pre-winter flurry is just starting, but I don't think I will have the numbers I did last year at this time. I am seeing more and more of them, just not in my backyard or where I can make a safe shot most of the time. Still, not the explosion that made me target them last year about this time!

Because of where I live, I can't speak about tree rats, but my numbers there are MUCH higher than chippers.
