Check it - kind of cool - AVS Slugs Expansion ( testing )

I recently purchased some of these in 22gr for my .22 Taipan Veteran. Just playing around / experimenting / testing. I've got the Vet currently tuned for 18 gr JSB pellets at around 900-910 fps and it's shooting really good. I didn't change the gun at all as I don't want to mess with it at present BUT . . . I do intend on playing with, coming up with a repeatable tune with slugs.

My wife brought home a watermelon yesterday and upon cutting it in half today she was not a happy camper as it is not very ripe. Can't take it back so it was just sitting in the sink for a while. I asked . . . - if we ain't gonna eat it - can I shoot it? :) ( lol ) She was agreeable. It's about 11" across ( diameter? ). I parked one half of it on an old milk crate at about 35-40 yards out in the back yard and sharpy marker'd on a bullseye. Again - no change to the gun - so knowing these are heavier I frankly expected a drop on impact but quite the opposite - they were hitting a little high and to the left. I figured out where and adjusted accordingly aiming low and to the right. 9 more shots on it and all but 3 went right on through. I cut it in half and then in half again to pull 3 out that were just shy of the far side of it. The "wound channel's" were pretty wicked - check the expansion on the slugs themselves.

.22 Vet Long tuned to 910'ish with 18gr jsb pellets. I really have no idea but a "guess" would have these 22gr slugs running low-to mid-800's? ( think? )

What might be a recommended tune for these slugs? My Veteran is a newer one and thus has a LW barrel vs. (apparently) the older ones came with the CZ's. From what I've read here and at other forums - apparently the CZ's are "better" with slugs? Nothing I can do about that - the LW barrel I have is the LW barrel I have. These slugs are 217's which are supposed to be better / easier (?) on choked pellet barrels. Everything I've seen / read says 920 - 930 plus for slugs - y/n?

Good slugs, thanks for showing.

I also understand Stephen makes a .254, which should suit a Huben K1 .25, anyone?

Yep harrymoreland. I shoot his 40gr .254 HP cup base slugs from my modified AF Condor. I have a custom barrel in .252 that has a 1:15 twist on it. I finally got the gun tuned last week to match the slug. At 40 yards, my 10 shot group was .2835" c2c. The slugs are magnificent. And Stephen is amazing!

I think the CZ's in .22 caliber had a faster twist than the LW barrels. If I'm not mistaken, the twist of the CZ is 1:16 while the twist of the LW is 1:17.7

I've heard that 1:16 is the ideal twist rate for .22 slugs. Regarding velocities, the best thing you can do is put up some paper at 40 yards and check your group. Don't worry about hitting the bullseye. Just line the cross hair on the same spot each time and fire. Ideally, the group should be hole in hole, or at least touching. If they aren't, start playing with the velocities. make sure you chronograph each change in power setting. That way when you start to see improvement on the group size, you know the velocity. Then you can log that just in case the settings were changed.

Once you get really tight groups, then sight in your scope. Every gun is different, and every barrel will have slight variations. Even from the same manufacturer in the same caliber. So it's difficult to say, set your gun to this and expect the same results I have on my gun. But those settings will definitely get you into the ballpark.

I think Anthony from Talon Tunes has forums dedicated to specific air rifle manufacturers on his website ( www.talonairgun.com ). I'm not trying to promote a competitive website. I'm just trying to steer you in the right direction. Guys on there will tell you exactly how to tune your gun, and what slug to use. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there's been much action on the website lately.
