Can you "wear out" a rubber mulch trap?

Until recently I used the cardboard box filled with rubber mulch and used blue masking tape to cover the shot-up cardboard.

Decide to upgrade and built the box pictured below. I still cover the cardboard with tape as it begins to wear out. I have found that dumping the lead fouled mulch into a plastic bag and just stirring up the mulch almost 100% of the pellets will drop to the bottom as I scoop the mulch out by hand. No water needed, except for washing up my hands afterwards. The handle on the top makes for easier transport.

I really like GBGunner's idea of the top fill with the mulch and the side loading of the targets.

What I have works pretty well.

I have a rectangular shaped clothes basket and 3 bags of the rubber mulch nuggets from Lowes. I shoot everything from My HW 30 to my .22 lr rimfire. Nothing passes through it. Even if it did, there is a 2' x 4' piece of 3/4" rubber stall mat behind it. Hmmmmm..................maybe might see what the 9mm can do. By the way, I'm about 50 yards away when I shoot it.
