Ruler That isnt going to break the bank but will also last? Uses will be measuring shooting groups and odds/ends.....thanks guys

Don't know about vernier calipers, however the IGaging calipers (available on Amazon) work a real treat. Good vernier calipers seem to be hard to come by these days, dial calipers too. My 2c.

You would be hard-pressed to find actual Vernier calipers nowadays. You can get an inexpensive set of dial calipers or better yet digital calipers. Mitutoyo are pretty much the standard which everything else is measured by. 0 to 6 in about 129 bucks. Or stop by the drafting store and for five bucks get a circle template

Starrett calipers are top notch... many models from $100 to ~$1000.

I think for gun related stuff you dont need to spend this much , simple say rcbs or equivalent is fine for measuring barrels slugs brass shell casings shims ect . they are accurate and can be had in in or mm for like $50 shipped I had more expensive ones and I broke them , The rcbs are better and just as precise and way more durable .

Mitutoya, ~$130 depending on what sizes you need. (Order from Grainger or another dealer that carries legit stuff)

When I ran my custom shops, I used Mitutoyo calipers that a friend hooked me up with..
They were fantastic quality! [Honestly, I had always just used Harbor Freight versions]
When I asked him where he got them, he told me just to use Grainger..
Too many places [especially online] will knowingly or not - sell clones / fakes..
For any gamblers out there - [Like me] I also did come across these..
Amazon seems to actually carry the real deal amazingly enough..
2 options, 1 for a few bucks more - including authenticity / traceability
But, from all of the reviews - People are guaranteeing them to be good to go.

I've got a Phase II 6" which (for airgun work) seems to be just as accurate as the 8" Mitutoyo solar one I have. Of course I basically use it to measure for o-rings and such, not down to 1/10,000 of an inch.
I was given these by the relative of a machinist who had passed away. I think the Mitutoyo is about 5 times the price of the Phase II.

You definitely don't want a vernier caliper. What you need is a good digital caliper that is accurate to at least .001
The digital versions will zero or switch between metric, standard and fractions of an inch with the touch of one button.

No it is not real. That is a Chinese knockoff. All Mitutoyo calipers are made in Japan and never ship from China. There are lots of fake Mitutoyo products on Amazon as well.

They are "misusing" the term. You basically have 3 types. Vernier, Dial and Digital. You don't see many true vernier calipers anymore.

There's a good reason you don't see them anymore and it's the same reason you don't see people navigating with a sextant. There are better ways now.

These are actual "vernier" calipers. They are great for quick measurements, and you can carry them in your pocket. These ones I have are not very precise. But I did get by with them prior to getting my dial and digital ones.

I kind of figured it was fake and very gd point if it really was Japan made it wouldn't be shipped from china....very interesting guys.

I'm from RI and we were home to a co. Called brown / sharpe and i bet they made a real deal caliper.
