Call me crazy......?

My second Yong Heng compressor arrived safe and sound just yesterday. I bought my first one just about ten days ago. I have been very impressed with it...works great. Then I got to thinking......(sometimes thats a bad thing for me.) These YHs work really well. These YHs are relatively inexpensive. These YHs are built in China. China is constantly locking down due to the Wu-Flu. Container ships from China are constantly stuck floating off shore. This is a very unstable environment that we live in today. The supply chain issues are......well we all know. So I ended up buying another one that I found for $295. I'm gonna make sure that all is well and that it works properly and then mothball it for just in case later on down the road. These PCPs, unlike springers, are useless without an air source. With no air they turn into very expensive hood props or what ever. I'm far from a hoarder....just kinda thinking ahead. Plus $295 isn't a bad price.

Planning ahead, not hoarding, sounds familiar :) Smart move, I say.

I have two also. Bought the second because I overheated my first several times to the point where it smoked. So, I no longer trusted it

Second one died in two months. The factory did not put locktight on the second stage piston and it came loose and broke. Twelve dollars and an hours worth of labor to fix it. Then to make things worse I aired up my Impact with my newly repaired compressor without any oil in it. Put oil in it and ran it for a year. Just tore it down to replace the rod which I suspected would have sustained damage from running with no oil.

Took the non trusted one out of mothballs and replaced the piston cuz it was an early one prone to failure and way past it's probable failure time. It had leaks everywhere but got it running for now.

When you are Brain Damaged like me you often forget things so, as you can see, it's good to have two.

Mine just stopped one day. Rather violent stop. After tear down, top of piston broke. 2 months waiting for a new part. Then at reassembly, oil gasket had shrunk, needed a new one. 2 months waiting for the new part and this was before the lockdowns!

I'm replacing seals constantly, so while I love my own compressor, I also have been tempted to buy a second just to have one while I repair the first.

No you aren't crazy. . . . . .at least in my book

My thinking is it depends on your budget. Would be great to have a spare, but do I want $300 sitting in a box, in the garage? My back-up is a $45 Chinese hand pump, and it will have to do until repairs are completed, should repairs be required. Agree with others that later Yong Hengs are longer lasting, than earlier ones, and many report years of faithful service. The other thought is what technical improvements might come into play during the several (hopeful) years my Yong Heng lasts? The digital model comes to mind, as an example. I wouldn't call anyone crazy for having more than one Yong Heng, just maybe a little jealous their budget is bigger than mine. WM

I wouldn't pay an extra $100 for the digital version since the electronics are far more likely to fail in the high heat and vibration.

I made this picture for the manufacturer explaining the changes that need to be made to the big head knockoff. Hopefully they listen.
