Cabelas Covenant 7 ▪ 5-35x56 FFP MIL ➔ Got any comments❓

I'm looking at a
Cabelas Covenant 7
5-35x56 FFP MIL

Do you have any comments, positive or negative?
I'm particular interested in:
▪ the glass quality
▪ the turret tracking

Note that "good" or "bad" won't be of much help to me, unless there is some context.
Like: "Glass is about even with my Athlon Helos 4-20x50."
Or: "When dialing 10mils of elevation it's off by 0.2mils".

Thanks! 👍🏼

Matthias

Matthias, I went to Cabela's a few years ago and bought the Covenant 5 and 7 series to test and see if the "package" met my expectations. At that time I was comparing them against the comparable Athlon Midas Tac models. Neither of the Covenants passed the test against the Athlon's from an optical or tactical stand point. The covenant glass was average and the turrets were mushy compared to the Athlon Midas. The Athlon glass was a bit to dark at full zoom and the eye box was a bit to tight at full zoom as well, not a great combination. The end game was that the Athlon Midas Tac's went back as well after I discovered that the Athlon ETR was what my eyes and tactical fingers could really appreciate. I'm not sure this has been much help, but, as you know, optic's are a very personal choice depending on one's state of eye sight. Mine appreciates very very good glass and precise turrets.

I've got the 7, 5 and 4 in FFP.

I don't have experience with a lot of the more popular optics here, so i can't compare to Athlon, Vortex, Element etc.

The Covenants I have the optics are better than; Hawke, UTG, MTC (MUCH better than MTC!) Crimson Trace and Alpha. The optics are not as good as Leopold, Meopta, but I'm always surprised how good it looks particularly vs. price.

Turrets have been good to me. They aren't as good as Meopta, but again, much better than MTC for example. They are far from mush, but they aren't extra crispy either. I can't really offer an opinion on tracking as i don't use turrets that way much.

When you get them on sale, I feel like they are a fantastic bargain. The 7 is physically HUGE! 35x is usable in good light. 30 is very clear even at dusk.

Patrick and Jake,

I really appreciate the detail of your comments, and the transparency as to what features you feel you can honestly review, and what features you don't have much experience with. 👍🏼
This goes way beyond the often seen biased two-line posts that just polarize (or worse, mislead).
THANKS!! 😊

Patrick,

your comments on your "very, very" high standards for glass are very, very helpful — because I have entered the scope pool on the shallow end with UTG, Discovery, and Falcon.
So, what's not good enough for you, might easily very well for me.

The ETR goes beyond my budget, but I'm looking at the Continental 5-30x56 FFP that steve123 will be reviewing shortly.

Jake,
the glass sounds quite good. Yes, I do want to use it at 35x, and video my shots in slo-mo.
However, I'm a notorious turret dialer, and if the turrets won't last more than a couple of years, maybe I should save up for the Continental mentioned above. Or maybe not.
Supposedly the Continental has Schott glass....

$650 = Vector Continental 5-30x56 FFP
$275 = Cabelas Covenant 7 5-35x56 FFP

I really don't have money for either, and don't own the gun that this scope is supposed to go on either.
But, please don't ask me the obvious question: "So, Matthias, what in the world are you looking at this scope then?!? 🙄"

Living in a Third-World country for a couple of decades has changed my shopping behavior. It goes like this:
"Don't buy when you need something. Buy when something is available. (Because, when you need it, it will be sold out for 6 months — or 2 years.)"

Now, I don't need the scope.
But I saw it available for a good price.... 🤔

I got it straight from the horse's mouth. Bought one at a Cabela's store, walked out the door and while putting the receipt in my wallet I noticed it said 30 day warranty. Well, it was a 2-3 years ago and it may have said 60 or 90 days. Anyhow, I took it back and ask the sales person what was going on. He said it doesn't matter if it has a lifetime warranty card in the box or is printed on the box, they will only honor what it says on the sales slip.

He did say that if you have one you got before BassPro took them over they SHOULD honor the warranty, provided you can prove the date you got it.
