Bullpup choice. Maybe Impact Compact.

I have had a marauder 22 for maybe 7-10 years and it has worked fine for my purpose. I open my window and shoot squirrels that damage my tractors and four wheelers, fuel parts and wiring. My shoulder needs to be replaced so I would like to pick up a bullpup in 25 because it should be easier on me. I was planning on ordering an Impact m3 compact. I like the length and the capacities of both the magazine and the air capacity for the number of pellets. The less I have to fill it up the better.

However I see a lot of opinions against the impact here. I do not particularly plan on tinkering with it just shoot it out of the box if possible but it would be nice to be able to take the occasional long shot if I want. My experience is with a variety of powder burners but I do not particularly like shooting them at my residence because it seems inconsiderate to my neighbors to have to hear it. I see a lot of names in airguns that I have no experience with talked about here. So looking for a little direction. Thank you for the input.

How far are you planning on shooting?

For my yard pests I was looking at the .25 or something similar, but ended up going 180 and went with a .177 EdGun R5M. At 30 yards it is a single hole, at 50 it is the same thing...haven't gotten to go further quite yet. With a good shot the .177 will do just fine on yard critters. That and you can get more pellets for the same price as the .25, and you can get more shots out of the same air tank. ;)

I was using my .22 RedWolf as well, though I have that dialed way back to not blast through fences or anything.

@vaplinker Well, I had a Impact Compact and sold it. The RTIs are simpler design, cost less and have a fantastic reputation for accuracy. Also, the simpler designer of the RTI Prophet Performance Compact will make it better carry field gun than the Impact.

Plus I have to admit too, I like being a bit different, and everyone and their dog seems to have an FX Impact.

Mostly I am only shooting between 50-100 ft. I would like to go to a 25 in order to dispatch the squirrels quicker. I know they are just pests but I prefer to see them suffer as little as possible.

Any caliber will do that, you just need to make sure you have good shot placement. A .177, .22, .25, .30, or what ever caliber will all have the same effect. I have seen squirrels take a 410 and run off, as well as with larger calibers due to crappy shot placement. Focus more on placement instead of a larger pellet.

To many people get into the mind set that you need the biggest pellet to take small game. With the 25 you will have to worry about pass through and secondary damage of other things.

I've been squirrel hunting with my taipan veteran standard .25 the last couple years. Also have a .25 dreamline tactical and a .22 zbroia kozak I hunt with. The taipan is my favorite. Shoots the fx hybrid slugs amazingly out to 50 yards which is the farthest I shoot at them usually in the woods. I get 4 to 5 mags out of a fill.

I did just buy an impact compact .30 from a guy on here. Should be here this week. I really wanted to buy a leshiy 2 for squirrels. But couldn't pass up the deal on the impact

I got a chance to shoulder a few different guns the other day I have been looking at for a long time and it was a real treat. The Uragan, the Delta Wolf, the Huben K1 and the Lelya 2.0. I really liked the Uragan and I will be getting one from Charlie next year, but I LOVE the Lelya and I am getting a deposit on it now. I don't know what it was, but it shouldered so well. It felt nice looking, the weight was perfectly centered, the line of sight when shoulder was perfect, the overall feel was great. OP wants a compact bullpup, get the Lelya 2.0 in .25, put a US Optics TS-12X or a Hawke Frontier 30 FFP (if you need illumination) on it and start hunting. It's a beauty.

There are some naysayers screaming caliber doesn’t matter. I’ve shot a lot of squirrels with .177 (12 FPE) head shots and they bounce around kicking & flailing. It takes some patience for them to stop moving around enough to put a hole in the skull. I tried a .177 chest shot and it ran away to die somewhere else out of visual range before I could reload. A couple times, .22 polymag flying out the muzzle around 750fps and impacting a bushy-tailed rodent head 15 meters away popped an eyeball hanging out of the socket but the dang thing would crawl around trying to hide. There have been several super-squirrels I’ve shot in the head and still have deliberate movement, then coninue to survive multiple follow-up shots in the head and chest. I know they weren’t misses because the body part being shot would get knocked, then I would see all the holes after recovering the pest. Most .22 polymag shots to the chest would cause blood oozing out as they cling to the tree for a few seconds and drop without all the flailing. BUT, a .25, a polymag chest shot (typically 15 meters) would drop them immediately with a startling “p0p”. Sometimes it was a gory scene with a lot of blood falling from the tree all at once instead of pouring out like the .22. I forget what velocity my .25’s are, but not very fast because I cranked the hammer tension lower until the shots were quiet with pesting accuracy at close range. Sure, it might be dead the millisecond it caught .177 lead in the brain, but if you don’t want all that flailing around, going with a bigger caliber high in the chest might be the ticket.
