I use a version 2.5 to incapacitate flies to feed to a terrarium of tree frogs. A good shot or two with sand can stun the fly or wound it enough that I can grab it and throw it into the terrarium. I fill it with well-sifted and sized sand instead of salt, so that the froggies don't eat too much salt. Yes, I know they say not to use sand in a Bug-a-Salt, and I do note that the sand can bounce back into the eyes; it happens a lot.
Interestingly, sand doesn't kill flies nearly as well as salt, which makes me think that it is the salt ions that kill the bug, not the impact or hole the salt grain makes.
Spiders get a pass around here. There are so many that some times of the year the spiders probably eat more other spiders than flies. So far they haven't been a problem.
