BSA R10SE trigger adjustment

I was just trying to adjust the trigger on my new R10, and found that the first stage is what it is, very long. I prefer a shorter first stage, but I suppose I will get used to it as it is. It was set from the factory as short as it will go. I would also like to lighten the 2nd stage pull to around 1.5lbs, but all it can do is 2lbs. The only thing I can think of is a lighter spring, but that may be a tough one as the factory spring is already pretty darn tiny. Anyone have any ideas? Don't get me wrong the trigger is entirely useable, I have had a lot worse, but I will be the first to admit I am a trigger snob. Almost all my PB's have worked over or replaced triggers, and I like my airguns to have nice ones too. If I have to use it as is, not the end of the world, as it is not that bad, but that long takeup really bothers me. I do like 2 stage triggers, but 3/8's take up is way more than I like.

I bought a R10 Mk2 a few years back which has a real BSA trigger unlike some BSA/Gamo models. After a bit of fiddling with the adjustments to shorten the first stage and take up the creep in the sear break, it’s as good as any of my euro gun triggers. I’m sorry I don’t recall the exact adjustments I made and I’m not sure exactly the pull and break weights but they are light and crisp and I can measure them for you if you’d like.

A word of caution: the safety on my gun no longer works. When I adjusted the pull, it overrode the ability for the safety to function. OK by me, I shoot only FT with it and I’ve added a single shot tray.

To your point on adjustment. The manual has really good instructions on adjustment and even go so far as to tell you to not make some of those adjustments 😳. Also, there are videos on just about everything you might want to do or need to do to your gun from XTX. I’d suggest reviewing his videos on BSA as he is a wealth of knowledge.

Here’s one I found very helpful.

What i do ....

Remove the transfer bar and using a thin shim of poly sheet, brass etc ... CA glue a small rectangle piece on the bottom edge where the trigger contacts it.

This will ( Pending Thickness & in the .015" to .030" range typically ) take out a lot of the 1st stage travel. You can still have safety correctly adjusted along with sear overlap as well.

Done this dozens of times .. works great !!!

Second stage is breaking at 9 oz.

Here is an excerpt from my BSA Manual...

Adjustment points5,4,3,2 and 1 will allow you to achieve the same results.

This trigger is highly adjustable,as is. However Only undertake this if you are comfortable in your abilities,as the rifle can be rendered Unsafe if this is not performed correctly. I tested mine by striking the butt repeatedly with a rubber mallet to insure a safe state of adjustment.

The R10 SE has an Outstanding trigger!

Hope this helps You.

I want to thank everyone for the replies, they give me hope that I will be able to get my trigger right. I have viewed XTX's website, they are very informative, now I will be able to take down my rifle and have no surprises.(tiny springs and balls!!). I will fiddle with it again later this evening and hopefully get it a bit better. Motorhead, thanks for that shim trick, if it is still unsatisfactory with further tinkering I will go to my local hobby shop tomorrow with my micrometer and get some brass shim stock. I know they carry it in several thicknesses, I am sure they have some in the range you specified. I will try to report back tomorrow on my results. Thanks again for the help, you guys go above and beyond to help guys like me and I want you to know it is very much appreciated. I just hope I can help someone like you all helped me! Tune in for the next episode.......................

I did manage to get the first stage travel way down, I love it now. Has just a little takeup before it hits 2nd stage, which I was not able to do much about. Not perfect, but it is a nice trigger now and one I can get along with. I am going to continue to search for the tiny 2nd stage pull weight spring, either a softer one or one I can modify. I do not want to modify the factory spring, as that may be hard to replace. I think with a lighter spring I can get where I want to be. The factory spring seemed really firm when I took it out. Someday I may take the trigger apart and polish the contact surfaces if it is needed, that usually helps a lot. But that is down the road sometime, I have to be in the mood to do things like that. Who knows, it may smooth out more with shooting alot. Thanks again for the help---------Randy
