BSA R10 Walnut stock oil

I have a 2 year old R10 MK2 with Walnut stock. It’s beautiful. Problem is that I have been hesitant to try to improve the look of the stock, worried I’d muck it up instead. 

The manual says to periodically treat the stock with either a proprietary oil or Linseed oil. 

I’ve read plenty of forums with each member having their own opinion on how to treat and protect their wood stock. 

Basically, there is no consensus on one product or brand. 

So I went ahead and bought 100% pure walnut oil. Food grade. Like, people put this on their salads. Hey, it’s a Walnut stock so why not use walnut oil?

It now has a deeper, glossier finish and feels soft in the hands. Before, it felt dry and looked dull. 

I’m quite satisfied with the way it turned out.

Theres multiple types of walnut oil that can be used. I use boiled linseed oil and it works very good also. Good job on the stock. If that walnut oil works anything like the boiled linseed oil the grain in the stock will continue to come out and the grain and figure in the wood will really pop.

Walnut oil works well and doesn't go rancid like some oils when used for woodwork. Just know it takes a very long time to cure and if possible more than 24 hours between coats is ideal.

I have read much on the use of walnut oil for gun stock refinishing. Myself, I prefer Milk Paint pure Tung oil:

Tru-Oil, Tru-Oil, Tru-Oil. I've treated two of my RAWs and an old Anschutz with one coat and they look brilliant.
