BSA Buccaneer questions

Came home to a pleasant surprise, my wife found me a old school BSA Buccaneer for my birthday :). The old school version, with the threaded muzzle and air stripper. I am SUPER pumped about this gun, you have no idea!

Gun is .177, with the rubberized black stock.

I need a good LDC, preferably the most quiet, short one I can get.


Also curious, if anyone has tried .177 NSA slugs in theirs?

My Scorpion, (same platform) shot 10.5 crosmans best stock. The valve wastes a lot of air from hammer bounce, you can here it sound like a fart if there is a hill in front of you. I didn't need the full power since I just shoot field target with mine, so I cut a couple coils off the hammer spring and set it with barely no preload. My shot count doubled and now it shoots 14.5 ft lbs from a 2600psi fill. It likes H+N FTTs at this power level.

I finally made it to the range with this gun, 5 months later. I only brought one tin of ammo like a fool. I bought JSB Hades just for this rifle, and assumed they would shoot well enough for squirrels to 30 yards. Ten shot group was about 8 inches. The last time I saw a group so bad at 25 yards it was the baffles in another gun. This one has no baffles. I should have brought more ammo to try but that was just terrible. Worst accuracy I have ever seen, so bad it made me feel sick. I put it up as soon as I finished firing that group and spent the rest of the day watching my kids shoot their little .22.

I will try again this weekend, maybe try without the “brake” on the end and a few more pellets. Definitely not the scope, brand spanking new bushnell prime 4-12 AO in a set of BKL’s. 


Also, the gun leaks. I filled it when I bought it and put it up, when I pulled it out it had leaked down to zero. Not even enough air pressure to make a fart. I filled it back to 3,200 and it leaked back down to 1,200 or so in about 5-6 days.

I want to give it a chance though, I have seen a lot of positive reviews.

Ten Crosman copper mags at about 20 yards out back. Heading to the range for more testing :)

Gun shoots good. Seems to throw 2 out of every ten shots out of the group. This is with Crosman Copper Magnum 10.5 grain. Second pellet tested, showing potential. Here is a typical ten shot group at exactly 25 yards from a bench. Coulda, woulda, shoulda been sub half inch but there are those two flyers. Very frustrating!

Still pretty darn good for a $300 pcp repeater shooting pellets from the Walmart shelf. By the way, I did remove the barrel band. Took that off before I even fired the first shot.

Yeah I am pretty happy with that one. Here is 20 shots and if I remember right, with a small scope adjustment. The corner bulls are smaller, about a 2/3 of an inch target. I always drop two with this gun. But there’s 20 in about a half inch right here, at 25 yards I will take it!

I admit it could be me but I usually can call my misses. A few pellets tested and maybe a longer trigger screw, and leak fixed, and this could be my go to. For now the humble disco is still the one I grab first.

The Mainejim in your reply about the Buccaneer makes me think you might be from Maine. Well, I am probably one of the biggest airgun nuts from this state. Actually, I thought I was the only one.😃 Anyway, I'm in my 15th year of serious airguns and do own a BSA Scorpian that shoots very well. Only problem I see with it is the small air tank. I live in Hollis, Maine which is about 20 miles west of Portland. I usually shoot benchrest in the Fall/Winter with a gang from North Berwick that have a 25 meter inside range. Also do as much FT matches as I can. The CV-19 has almost stalled us on shooting indoors since last Feburary. If I can be any help to you please e-mail me at

LOL! Sorry BryanH, I miss sent my reply but if you are ever up this way I'm usally always ready to talk or shoot airguns. I have shot a couple AAFTA Nationals in Texas back in 2009 and 2013 and know a few airgunners down that way. Never met anyone that shot a airgun from Missouri and don't know of any clubs there either. Looking at your target your groups look pretty decent. Do you carpenter for a living? Been there and done that but I only work on my home. Regards, Bill

Hi Bill,i've been into airgunning since the early seventies growing up overseas,my first one was a Diana 27 and how i wish i still had it.

Got in PCPs about ten years ago and it's been a fun time.

Unfortunately i'm well north of you in a tiny town called Wellington,i'm pretty sure you never heard of it.

No competitive shooting here unfortunately but i do have a 100y range at home that i can pretty much shoot anything i want.

Would love to shoot indoor benchrest someday,its usually windy up on my hill.

BryanH i did put a 10mm screw in the trigger and it made a huge difference.

I tried a few of the better pellets but those Baracudas shoot best by far.I think it was scattering the other pellets because they were coming out the barrel at over a thousand fps and im sure i could have tuned to another pellet but decided to stick with the heavier pellet.Like i typed above, i loosened the HS quite a bit to get those Cudas down to 880 fps.
