Brocock Bantam Tuning

I have been so pleased with my Brocock Compattos after I tuned them, that I thought that I would try a used Bantam. I picked up a used 177 Bantam from another forum member, though I was hoping for a 22. Anyway, out of the box, I was getting a pretty poor efficiency for the 480 cc tank: 0.5 fpe/ci with the factory spring (lots of preload) and factory hammer set. It was doing 910 fps with JSB 10.3 at around 19 fpe for 20 to 30 shots at 3% variance. Not very efficient.

I opened up the action and started playing with the slingshot hammer. It seemed as if there was no "slingshot" in it - the hammer screw was all the way out and the hammer was resting on the valve pin. I could not back off the hammer screw far enough (or so I thought), so I replaced it with a shorter screw. When I re-installed with what I though to be some "bounce" I could only get around 550 fps with 10.3gr. I tried a much heavier spring - still 550 fps or so. So, I started adjusting the hammer screw out further and further and even backed off to a weaker hammer spring. I got the efficiency up to about 1.33 fpe/ci - roughly 808 fps with JSB 13.4 at 19.5 fpe for 30 shots from 185 to 170 bar. Note that I messed with the springs, a space and the hammer screw quite a bit. In the end, I found if I removed the credit card spacer 10 mil or so, I changed the velocity around 40 fps - so there is more tuning yet to come.

I was pretty happy with the original setup, so I shot some longer strings - indoors 10M: 110 shots at 1.09 fpe/ci at 19 fpe with JSB 13.4 from 200 to 135 bar, I had quite a few errors with this string, due to the offhand shooting

My last string was 76 shots with JSB 10.3 at full and 1/2 power from 220 to 170 bar. Full power was going too fast for the 10.3 at roughly 895 fps, while half power at 856 fps was good. Attached is the shooting sheet at 55 yards (bucket and sticks mode). Note I gave up on the 13.4's after 10 shots - all over the page, but the 10.3's at 55 yds were 1.05" for 10 shots. Not too bad. I will have to try a different 13.4 batch. Group #23 was the best, with just one "pull" on my part. I had to give up tonight due to cold temps.

I suspect there is more tuning to come for this setup, but the bottle gun is showing some great potential.
 
Interesting results. I have a Bantam in .177, and from the factory tune, shoots 10.3s at 950 fps on High, and 920 fps on Medium. While the High is a bit too fast and gives the occasional flyer, it shoots like a laser beam on Medium at 920 fps with the 10.3 JSB. Last month my first card with this gun on Medium at 25M benchrest was 243-7x. I shot all 3 cards with 20 sighters with the Initial fill to 230 bar, and ended at 160 bar. I estimate maybe 95 shots total. Also, I’ve recently discovered that it likes the 13.4 Monsters on High at 830 fps. Haven’t gotten it past 25 yards yet with those but just as accurate if not more so than the 10.3s at the same distance. 
 
Tuning is definitely an "adventure" with these Brococks. Without having the ability to tune both the stroke and pre-load you kinda have to tune to the FPE/pressure that the gun wants. I've got the Compatto. On a 235 bar fill I cannot get the hammer adjusted to slingshot.With it backed out so that at rest it has the tiniest of a gap it shoots like 600fps. I adjust it in (increasing the lift) until I get a 900fps (with 14.3) but then it's always a declining string. If I keep turning it in (basically decreasing the stroke) I will eventually get a declining string. It shoots like 908 up to 935 and back to 908. Averaging 915 for 26.5FPE. This tune works really good but the efficiency is a dismal 1.1fpe/cuin. I wanted max power out of it so this is where I leave it. I think that the Slingshot hammer is just not big enough to work at this power. (The Daystates are bigger) It is really touchy though. A change of like 1/8 rotation is the difference of declining vs bell curve, and then another 1/8 turn is 2 FPE lower in power. So you really need to get it in that "1/4 turn" range it likes at your specific fill.
I think in order to get a better efficiency/lower power tune I would have to utilize a much lower fill pressure, adjust the hammer to be in "sling" and then slowly decrease spring preload (by cutting or swapping springs) until a proper curve is obtained. My guess is that it would likely be in the 12fpe range.
This is likely the reason when Daystate took over and put the SSH in these they didn't put it in the FAC, nor the .25. There is just not enough room in the smaller tube for the 2 piece hammer. Remember that when in slingshot only the momentum from the inner hammer is being used.
When people found this out they added them, without much benefit, to increase their sales.
 
"Skip-in-WV"My177 Bantam is very different. It likes Kodiaks. The best I can get out of it is 65 shots at arround 850 feet per second on the high setting. And, to get that I put a 1/4 spacer behind the the hammer spring. Do you have any pictures of the hammer and how to adjust it for more power and shots?
Sounds like your hammer screw needs to get turned in a bit, I would also take the spacer out. Here is what the sling shot hammer looks like. If you remove the gun from stock you will see a flat screw head as well as a hex screw head inside the slot on the left side of action. The hex screw is what locks the adjusting screw. It is 2mm (IIRC). Then you use a long 2.5 (IIRC) hex inside the hole in the end cap to adjust the screw.. The wrenches are either 2 +2.5 or 2.5+3. Like I said though be very careful when adjusting as it is not just turn in one, then turn in one, then turn in one........and if you don't get it turn back out 3. I can almost guarantee you won't get it in the exact same spot. Believe me it can be frustrating. You may have to even sit it down, walk away and come back later.

The hammer arrangement sounds a lot like the hammer in the Marauder.
Not sure what you mean by "the first like doesn't work", but the hammer is NOTHING like the Marauder. The Slingshot hammer is 2 piece. You have the hammer with an adjuster inside a "cage". The inner piece is spring loaded so that after the initial hit the spring holds the hammer back off the valve.

My Compatto is a .22 at 915 with 14.3's. Skip said his is .177. Not sure what pressure he is starting and stopping at but 65 shots sounds horrible as the Kodiak's are only 10.6g.
Even yours, at 95 shots isn't very good as far as efficiency goes. Putting your #'s in calc comes up with .95fpe/cuin. I think the long TP design has something to do with it. It is 20fpe on .177, but I had a regg'ed MRod in .177 putting out 20fpe and it was like 1.4fpe/cuin. I really think it's this smaller hammer trying to push the higher energy too, not getting near the benefit as those 12fpe guns.
 
BigTinBoat, yes, I agree, but that estimate was a total SWAG after shooting a match in 25M benchrest. It could have been much more than 95, but it was at least that amount since I shot the entire match, starting around 225 to 230 bar, and shooting down to 160 to 170 bar or so. Its so hard to tell with those crappy gages that come with the Bantam. Mine reads at least 20 bar high, so when I fill to around 230, it shows 250+ on the gun's gage. I know I shot about ten sighters before the match, and then at least 3 to 5 every card, and then another ten shots or so after the last card while waiting for everyone to finish, so come to think of it well over 100. I think I was just trying to make a point that 65 is lower than expected. My velocity numbers from the factory seem higher than what I've been seeing here with other .177 owners, and are higher than the 18 fpe that is put out by Brocock for what the specs are for the gun. I'm running around 20.5 fpe on High. I'm going to shoot this month with the 13.4 Monsters and see how that goes.

It's tough. Problem is that "modding" or anything that could result in a power increase is basically forbidden on the UK sites that mostly discuss Daystate and Brocock.
I got my information about adjusting the hammer from taking apart and looking at it and analyzing what it is "designed" to do. This is how I came to the conclusion that the Slingshot works best in low power guns. Now the Daystate is a bit different as the tube is larger and more room to put a bigger hammer.

How? These are 2 slingshot hammers. The one on right has the set screw adjusted too far out. The whole "cage" flys forward the entire length and then stops at the cushion in front of valve. The inner hammer then only moves like 1/4" or so forward.
I did try to make it a "solid" hammer and use a short spring to put the entire unit in free flight, but it was a lot harder to cock. You may be able to do that with your non slingshot hammer though.

I had actually thought of using stick-on lead weights like we used to weight crankbaits. They are thin sheets of lead that are sticky backed.
I think it would wind up coming off though after a while.
 
"Skip-in-WV"Ok. I took it apart. The adjustment screw was almost all the way in. I was only able to screw it in an 1/8 turn. It protrudes 1.92mm from the end of the hammer. Should it be more? It screws out easily, but appears to have bottomed out.
Sounds like it's in a little too far. I didn't measure mine, but the black hammer on left in pic is how mine is adjusted. Looking at my calipers I'd say mine is about 2.5mm, but each gun is going to be different depending on other variables. I can't be 100% positive, but the calipers in pic are showing 2.82, there is a possibility that was the measurement of mine.
