Brand new HW97k .20, lots of potential

Brand new HW97k .20, gotta love the twanggg!

Before test firing I thoroughly cleaned the barrel first with a couple of denature alcohol saturated patches, followed by a couple dry, a couple more with alcohol, then a BoreTech Rimfire blend soaked patch which I let "soak" in the barrel for 15 minutes before running several dry patches through until clean.

Took several shots, lots of dieseling, then ran a couple more patches through to clean away the dieseling byproducts remaining in the barrel. Sightron SIII 10-50 FT scope mounted, and after a quick 15 yd sight in, I got it roughly dialed in for 55yds. Here is a 5 shot group I shot this morning at 55yds using H&N FTTs from a seated, FT position, with the foreend rested in a padded Anschutz glove (worn on supporting hand). The potential is there. So is the twang and buzz of a new HW😉😆, which has a loose guide and no tophat.

The last two pics were taken last night: My wife had no problem whacking the kill zone on my 55yd resettable on her first try. Don't ya love it when a spring gun honeymoon starts off on the right foot? 😉

I can only imagine how it will shoot once the powerplant/internals are taken care of properly...The stiff factory trigger also needs to be adjusted for a lighter break...And I'd like to add some weight to the buttstock to better balance the rig to my shooting style.

55 yard, 5 shot group. Held off to the right about 1.5" due to wind

A moment to stretch the legs and back, and appreciate the new toy:

Did Krale save the best for last? After ordering this one, .20 cal 97ks are out of stock for the time being.

You got the one I wanted! Awwwwwwww ive been saving for months and was going yo get it next month. Oh well I can wait for them to restock! Smart man to go with the .20 and double smart to buy it from krale. Only way to go IMO. Small enough for ft and big enough to lay down the hate on some giant jacks rabbits. Obviously the good deal from krale gave you a few extra sheckles for the scope then? Which scope is that on there with the huge side wheel?

Also I have been told a few things about dieseling that might be false maybe u can help me out. #1dieseling will melt your rear seal #2 dont use gun oil on springers #3 ballistol will do the same job with far less dieseling. I am not being a know it all I litterally only know what others have said about springers and I really want to know if your way is the proper way and a little bit of oil left in barrel after several dry patches is good for barrel and that small amount of dieseling isn't going to hurt the seal. Thanks.

Awesome Johnathan! You gonna love it...

Mine is a little older 2008 manufacture date. Has the compression tube and piston buttoned with a hornet kit and seal from ARH. The trigger has been disassembled polished and lubed then reassembled with tool steel pins. Its shooting just a tad over 14fpe. Have a Hawke 4-12x40 airmax on it right now but have been thinking about an upgrade in the near future! She's a tack driver and I think I'm going to get out all springers this weekend.

I'll try and post some pics. And groups!

The scope is a Sightron SIII 10-50X60 FT, was the easiest option for quick mounting

Hi Raden,

I have a system and I'm pretty consistent with it, it works for me. Everyone has their "proper way" of approaching their springers.

Regarding dieseling and its inherent damage to the piston seal, there are several factors to consider, but generally with new guns the factory leaves excess lube inside the compression tube and on the piston itself there is usually too much lube (face of piston seal also). This, along with the pressure/high temps generated causes dieseling, which can affect the internal dynamics of the rifle as well as its performance. Eventually, after shooting several rounds (number varies, depends on each gun) you can burn off the excess lube but the piston seal may suffer and can deform or harden. Some like to get inside ASAP and address this. Some just suck it up and accept the twang (at least for a short while). It all boils down to your preferences and what expectations you have of the rifle...

Gun oil and ballistol I do not use, I use different lubes for different parts of the gun, i.e compression tube, ID of the receiver, pivot points/linkages, cocking shoe, etc.

Hope this helps some.

Nice one James!

Sounds like your internals were sorted out real nice. You got power for many different applications😉. My main FT 97k in .177 was well under 11fpe, had the piston buttoned and an adjustable power Macarri UK kit. Shot cycle felt really fast but very smooth. It’s currently out for some custom work so we’ll see where it’s at soon.

I definitely think your rifle is worthy of an upgrade in optics. What were you leaning towards?
