Blackhound 1-8x28 - lesson for those of you (like me) new to gunning in general

Some of you are going to laugh and say "what a tool" and thats fine. My bad. As the subject would imply I'm new to "gunning" in general as I've never owned a firearm ( but did shoot a few while in the Navy ) and have recently started down this rabbit hole of PCP's in the last year or two. I own two with a third on the way.

So our favorite scope reviewer Joe Rhea (Cyclops) looked at and reviewed this little guy here and he went bonkers over it - it got his "Bad Ass" award as well as a few weeks later winding up on his top scopes of the year list. Me - waiting my my new gun to arrive - I grab one thinking I'll use it on that - if not on that one then I'll use it on one of the others that I already have. I eagerly wait for it to arrive, it shows up, I unbox it and indeed - it IS a beauty! Solid craftsmanship, 34mm tube, included rings, levels, some bling (stickers - lol), incredibly well packaged in the box with dense foam and snug fitting cut outs for each of the components, etc . . . I put the battery in it for the illuminated reticle and "oh that reticle!" - Joe was right - this thing is sweet!!!

I mount it on one of my existing rifles just to check it out - I'm stoked - this thing is really, really nice. I get it on, leveled and setup a target at 25 yards for a quick zero. I look through it and target is out of focus - no big deal - parallax adjustment and . . . . " how do you adjust the parallax?" "Oh Em Gee - you've got to be kidding me . . . " I'm muttering to myself as I'm now looking it up on my cell phone at Blackhound's web site. Sure enough - it says PLAIN AS DAY -----> Parallax - Fixed

I unmount it, and repack it back into the box where it now sits. It's a beauty of a scope - "very (very) lightly used" that I'm going to post in the classified area here if anyone is looking for one. For centerfire and rimfire guys this thing is the cats meow and gets good reviews from that crowd. So to those of you who may be like me - new to this game - READ - like *really read* all of the specs and have a good understanding on what it is that you're about to spend your hard earned money on. This one checked my boxes:

• Joe loved it ( I bought another scope that he reviewed and I really like that one )
• FFP
• Killer Reticle
• Illuminated Reticle
• Lifetime, fully transferable warranty

BUT . . . non-adjustable parallax - that came from way out of left field. That torpedo sunk the good ship Jimmy. Until yesterday I'd (honestly) never heard of such a thing. (shaking head . . . lol) {sigh}

Usually at lower magnification the parallax is not needed as much. I remember when I was really young some scope companies would reset the fixed parallax to a different yardage for a small fee. I think my dad has a couple old ones that have been reset to 50 yards.

How much range do need to use it. A small objective scope will do just fine if you adjust the parralax to 40 or 50 yards. Look for how to do it on youtube. Most scopes you just remove the lockring at the objective end and wind out the lens carriage to the setting you need.

I once found a scope I was interested in for sale at 25% off with free shipping. It was late and my internet connection kept phasing out so I'm trying to add the scope to my cart in one tab, research the scope in another tab and look for other items to include in the free shipping in a third tab.

I Googled something like "Konus AS34 parallax" and got the link below with description in the screen grab below:

I thought "perfect" but clicked on the link so I could continue to research the scope while I tried to add the scope to my cart. Internet remain glitchy so when it finally came back I just placed the order.

Long story short, I got the scope and it fit my P-rod as I intended (direct mount so I wasn't sure if it would work). But of course, fixed parallax at 100 yards. I was not happy with myself.

I still have the scope. I emailed Konus and they said they couldn't adjust the parallax and didn't recommend trying it myself. I'm still tempted to try it. I don't love the reticle but the illumination is nice and the eye relief, eye box and field of view are just what I was looking for in an under $200 P-rod scope. And I got it around $135 shipped.

Learned a lesson.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys. I just posted it to the classified section here @AGN - I'd just assume sell it to someone who can use it vs. dinking with it and most likely voiding a warranty. It is a beauty of a scope - just not for me. ( unfortunately . . . )

@Cyclops youtube channel he got a lot of feedback from folks in there too - a few mentioning that they'd like to buy if / when they have cash / covid ends and we're back to normal. So I mentioned that I have it available there too.

I recently bought a Athlon Helos 1-4.5x24, it """DOES"""" have a side focus parallax knob and goes down to 10Y, the scope is illuminated, and despite the notion that parallax adjustment feature is not needed in such a scope, I disagree. A bob of the head up and down or side by side looking through the ocular will quickly reveal plenty of parallax error on a fixed parallax 1-?x24. Also it clears of the image quality much better and reduces eye strain.

Can we hit stuff with fixed parallax, of course we can. The best advice is to keep one's eye centered in the eyebox, which helps negate PE.

Try that Helos if you want a 1-? for a pellet gun, you'll be pleased.
