Best Work Mat for tuning and holding parts? Preferences?

i just use an old towel .. if i had something special id spend more time keeping that nice than working, dremel grinding, no problem, shake it out and toss it in the washer lol ..

I love the cheap rubber mats from Amazon or Costco. As they wear out you just replace any tiles that get damaged.

I use bar drink mats. They are rubber covered with nubs, soft so won't scar and since the nubs stick up about a 1/4", they hold parts well. Mine are black, but they come in other colors too. Found them on ebay a few years ago.
Something like this....
I also use clear plastic condiment containers to hold parts, oil, Q-Tips, grease, Loc-Tite, anything small that needs to be kept track of. And since they are clear, you can readily see what they contain.

I've adopted a different approach, as I've had parts roll off my bench and its not fun trying to find them. Those little magnet part trays you can find at automotive stores are really nice for those steel parts

guess i will go with magnetic metal tray have to get a wife to get yoga mat sounds expensive

Look up silicone rubber mats used for soldering electrical components. Takes high heat well, obviously, but what I like are the compartments built in with a raised outer edge to keep small parts from rolling off.
Easy to clean and roll back up and does not take a shape of being rolled, flattens out easily

i like the real avid mats with the parts tray. it has a magnet built in and you can roll it up for storage.

My workbench has a 3/8 thick UHMW (hard plastic) top. I like to lay down a few PIG mats and work on the gun on top of those. That way I have a clean work mat each time. Soft enough to keep parts from bouncing if they drop onto it.
