We can get within 12-15 yards. Will start with smaller hogs first. So out of a Hatsan Flash which caliber would maximize penetration on a head shot? The Flash is available in .177, .22 and .25.

Why go for smalls first? Start with the sows if ya wanna thin the herd.
Bigs, meds, smalls to get rid of em as the smalls are more easily predated by other critters.

The smaller calibers will penetrate better than the 25. You’ve really got to have some oomph to get that 1/4” hole very deep. Imo 22 over 25 for the stock flash platform.

I also vote for .25cal. Place the shot between the eye and ear. Use a JSB Heavy or a Slug like the NSA 33gr .25cal slug, and you will drop them for certain.

Using too small a caliber is Animal Cruelty, the criminal charge. I would go with .30 cal, but .25 may work. Going under .25 would be unethical in my opinion, and illegal.

Seems the Flash has 38 ftp in .22 and 40 ftp in .25.. If the numbers are true.. You got plenty power to crack the shull in both cal...But the frontal area of the .22 is 2,25 x 2,25 x 3,14 .. 23,8 mm2.. The .25 has 31,7 mm2.. In other words. The .22 has about 20 percent more power per mm2 than the .25..

If you're worried about penetration you can always use H&N Hornet pellets if they meet the required accuracy that you need. But remember even with a pointed pellet you should hit the skull at a 90° angle to ensure it doesn't deflect.

Think with 38 ftp in .22.. Penetration is irelevant.. A Barracuda 21 grain will go at the right speed with 38 ftp.. Its a bonecrusher. Not a softie.

At 50 ft lbs a .25 cal Baracuda will drop piggy instantly with proper head shot at 30 yards. I would want to be closer with a .22 but I am sure the Cuda could get the job done.

As with all of these types of questions it comes down to a couple of points:
- What is the gun and can it be tuned?
- How good a shot are you?
I have my RTI PP 1 setup at 970-980 fps with a 25.39 gr. JSB KO slugs and I have 1.5" grouping at 100 yards which is 53+ FT lbs. At 50 yards its even better. I shoot/practice 3-5 times per week - weather permitting so my shots and focus remain at a known level. I have no doubt that with the right shot opportunity (critical also) that the .22 would drop it instantly.
