Best Caliber .30 or .357 for Hunting Raccoon, Fox, and Coyote

Hello Guys,

Need your opinions, please.

For hunting Raccoon, Fox, and Coyote am I better served with a .30 caliber or .357 caliber PCP? Field of view is usually less than 100 yards, but could increase up to 150 yards. But, 100 yards or less is the expected shooting distance for me in Northern Maine where vegetation is pretty thick!

I'm ordering a RAW HM1000X but can't decide between the two available calibers, .30 or .357. Your thoughts, please, without suggesting another PCP make. I've settled on the RAW!

It depends on what you plan to do with the animals once harvested. If you're hunting for food/nuisance control then I'd say go with the .357 as it gives better energy for long rang body shots which you may need with the much larger coyote. However, if you're looking at fur harvesting then I'd say go with the .30 and limit the range you take shots on the coyote to 75 yards.

Since you throw in Coyote I would have to go with one of the smaller center fire rounds. 17 Hornet at the minimum and you would have to give careful consideration to .223 due to availability and cost of ammo. If you want to spend $2000+ on an air gun that will under perform a $500 powder burner then I would go with the larger bore as diameter does matter. Its not all about fpe.

I would go with the 357. Here is a video of one of our members using the 357 bulldog to take squirrels at 100+ yards. http://airgunnation.dev/topic/357-benjamn-bulldog-vs-ground-squirrels/

The holdover for a 357 at 100 yards will be 4 or more mil dots. While at it, get the no limits rings by FX so you don't run out of clicks on your scope. You could also check out the Infinity scope mounts made by the company that makes eagle vision scope cams. They have come out with a new mounting system and rings which I think will be as good if not better than similar rings in the market.

At 100 to 150 yards, you will need between 4-6 mil dots holdover. The rings will help extend your range while keeping you from running out of clicks. Here is the link for the Infinity scope mounts.
