Best Cal for hunting supposing same foot pounds energy.

If your locked in at 55 ft/lbs

.30 50gr 700fps

44.75gr 745fps

.25 25.4gr 990fps

34gr 855fps

.22 18.1gr 1170fps

21gr 1085fps

23gr 1040fps

Accuracy is king, unfortunately we don’t always get to determine what speed that is.

Shooting a .30 at 700fps is going to make for some pretty healthy holdover at 100yds.

If he zero's his scope at 100yds wouldn't his "hold over" be ZERO?

With regard to the 100 yard scenario (long range in general), the ever-critical topic of accuracy inevitably becomes the most important variable. The original question constrained things as having equal accuracy / same placement. I promptly take that to mean “at modest distances” as a practical matter because accuracy will not be comparable at long distances. Nor is it the case that one will get the same energy from the smaller calibers without changing a whole host of things like a longer barrel, higher pressure, more air consumption, and comparing a .30 cal pellet to heavy .22 slug. It’s very much an apples and oranges comparison.

Doesn't make much difference if you are talking "good" shots.

More surface area of the projectile is gonna take more grunt to penetrate, in my opinion. So bigger diameter pills aren't always better. Plus take into trajectory, flatter usually means easier to make that "perfect" shot.

Agree 100%. As long as the caliber in question can do the job and considering whether the platfrom/shooter can make a shot to a vital zone or head, bigger isn't always better.

An arrow normally fly at around 330 fps + -

Suppose that arrow weights 400 grains including the broadhead.

Suppose that the broadhead is 1.5 inch.

Using the measure of Hunting Energy Units, a .357 Cal air rifle shooting the JSB 81.02 grains at 857 fps would give 24,787 HEU.

The arrow would give 198,000 HEU, that would mean that the injury of the arrow is 8 times more harmful than the one of the .357 Air rifle at that power.

A well placed .357 has already been enough for taking three white tailed deer. The dead was really soon because of perfect shot placement. Bot not even a drop of blood was in the ground.

I am sure that knowing how to measure the (at least theoretical) killing power, would be very helpful for taking a decision of which rifle you should bring with you for diverse kind of hunting.

Small birds, squirrels, rats and rabbits are not a matter of discussion, but racoons, jabalina, foxes, coyotes, are different story.

Lol who needs arrows according to your really useful formula golfers can go elephant hunting with driver

400,000++ HUE?! Suck that white tailed deers!

You are right.

The record of a golf ball according to google is 318 fps.

A golf ball weights 708.34 grain

The diammeter of a golf ball is 1.68 inch

159 foot pounds

In HEU´s that would be: 378,423

It would be very painful to get hit by that ball at 20 yards. At least for somebody of my weight, age and condition.

I do not know how an elephant would take it... Not planning to be there to investigate.

As JungleShooter says, the form of the tip is very important for penetration and damage to tissue.

It is not the same the penetration power of a broadhead than the one of a golf ball.

331,4 fps is record. My point being ur HUE is as useless to determine killing power than FPE/Joules/Newtons or what ever simply dose not tell anything. According to your HUE that arrow would deliver almost double of killingpower compared to full powerful hunting load of 308win and that golfball would be almost as leathal than any 50BMG load there is (max HUE of 1180000) . SO COULD YOU PLEASE tell me where the heck we need this HUE for and what it should tell us since maybe Im stupid but I dont really see it telling anything. Your biggest problem with that thing is diameter of projectile making it more leathal to throw ur shoe than shooting your 308win.

It is not my intension to judge you nor anybody.

I just say that it would be helpful to get an objective way to measure the effectiveness for hunting purposes with air rifles of each caliber.

Maybe the HEU that I mentioned is not a way and for sure there are other factors to take into consideration. And/or maybe the formula should be other.

Every suggestion to improve has to be analized notwithstanding the conclusion is that that proposal do not work.

So please, do not doubt about your self. If you think this proposed measure is not accurate and you have the way to improve it, feel free to improve.

If you think is useless, you might be right. No body should feel compromised or insulted.

its all relative to what youre doing and hunting ... bigger cals tend to be bigger heavier guns but bigger is ultimately going to be more conclusive when it hits .. ammo cost and availability plays into it to .. so 'very' generally, i dont like lugging a 10+lb .25 around while im stalking something, its not conducive to actually getting my victim, although ultimately it will be alot more effective when it nails something than my .22 marauder pistol that comes in at about 2lb's wet lol ... thats why at much much less power and reach that little pistol has probably 10X more kills under its belt than anything else i own, its simple, small, lightning fast on target and easy to stalk with for extended times ... if the same pistol was offered in .25 even with only 1 mags worth of air at higher power so its point blank range was the same as .22 i'd own it ... same if it was offered in .30 or 357 ..so yeah .. how easy it is to carry that gun around is huge to me personally .. they need to make it, and i will come :D
