Benjamin titan accuracy help.

Hey guys I am trying to figure out why my dads Benjamin titan is so inaccurate. I tried several holds including just shooting off a bag. although I am not the best at artillery hold i dont think my groups should be this bad. Im getting 7in groups at 20 yards. I tightened all screws before testing and the scope rings have a scope stop pin engaged. The scope visually seems fine and apears to have not moved. I am wondering if I might have a blown seal on my hands. The numbers seem a bit anemic but I dont shoot springers much. Maybe you guys can tell me if these numbers look bad. I was shooting crosman premiers 14.3g. 559,625,634,645,567,631,632,628,578,623,630,587,636,628,613,626,619,601,605, 567,605,591,598,598,578,609,602,611,597,608,587,584,610,611,590,608,560,592,585,581,597.

I dont like how sometimes its mid 500's and others mid 600's. I just dont know much about gas ram and springers. If you guys could tell me if this looks normal or not id be much obliged. Ty

G’day Ty I’ve owned two Titans a 177 and a 22 cal. I recently traded my 177 for a new HW30. Both rifles are very accurate but the 177 has killed more scopes than twice its new cost. Your numbers look a bit low for a 22 cal. I replaced the ram in my 22 for a Gamo ram and it was producing an average of 710 fps with H&N 14.65 grains. The original ram was about 60 kilos and the Gamo is 55 kilo.

I would replace the piston seal first if the ram was leaking I’m thinking it would completely fail similar to when your bonnet won’t hold up when that ram fails. Also check your breach seal with the tissue test.

Ive had numerous issues with accuracy in my Titans and after 5 years of owning them and the issues are in order of occurrence, scope, dirty barrel, breach seal and once was the ram. The 22 has been my go to rifle for pesting, it’s light, accurate and now with the Gamo ram easy to cock.

Good luck

Gary

Didnt know the gamo ram worked with it. Ty. I guess ill look up how to do tissue test and do that. Im guessing you just put a tissue between the seal on the barrel and if any of the sides blow out you got a problem? Anyway ill find it. I thought my dad cleaned it but ill do that proper and see if it helps. I forgot to mention 2 things. My retarded uncle shot the last scope that was on it with a 44 magnum when he was scaring a bear out of camp. The rifle seemed uneffected visually by it but the sxope was destroyed. Perhaps something bent in there. Also I see smoke after some of the shots. Is this dieseling and is that normal or a concern? I know my dad didnt clean it with petroleum based or flammable oil so maybe this is caused by something else. Ty guys. I know alot about pcps but this is strange waters for me.

Those numbers show a suspiciously wide spread. Could be dieseling, could be poor seal @ the breech. The tissue should be placed atop the breech, before firing. Look for it to fly into the air from escaping pressure.

Might benefit from shimming breech seal higher. Easiest fix, if that’s the problem.

Piston seal might be knackered. Barrel is likely oily from dieseling. Bore might need lapping/crown polishing. Scope could be KIA.

possible causes for poor accuracy are many unfortunately I’ve experienced most of them.☹️

Ty I forgot to mention make sure you have some type of spring compressor as these rams are under preload if you decide to replace the piston seal.

........... the .22 benjamin prowler i had shot 725 fps with 14.3 ... it varied about 10 fps (deviation) , and it was accurate. (easy to cock and the solid plastic stock was very tough. it was easy to cock and shoot, and the 4x scope was fine. it grouped a little more than dime-size at 25 yards - but would sometime have a flyer out those 5 shot groups. it was my truck gun until i sold it.) the .22 benjamin titans from walmart generally shot around 680 fps. -- but this erratic shot string with over a 50 fps spread is NOOO GOOD -- --- 559,625,634,645,567,631,632,628,578,623,630,587,636,628,613,626,619,601,605,605,591,598,598,578,609,602,611,597,608,587,584,610,611,590,608,560,592,585,581,597. --- it could be the gas ram not functioning as well as it did , could be a knicked or damaged piston seal , could loosing power at the transfer port via a bad breech seal. you'll need to order all three parts and rebuild. after about a month of breakin time for your new parts , if it is STILL not accurate - just buy a new barrel assembly for it. they are cheap because they are chinese-made. the chinese-made barrels do have a good barrel here and there , but more than 50% of the guns that are made in china with the lesser chinese steel either need work to make accurate , or just need to be thrown away. i think a .22 trail xl barrel is $17 , while the american-made .22 np2 barrel assemblies are $40. the piston seal, gas ram, and breech seal should be around $30 shipped if i remember correctly... if you have one of the earlier titans that had a shroud around the barrel - like the early prowlers , i think you're better off a far as performance goes .....another complaint i hear is that the newer plastic, glued on muzzle break causes inaccuracy......guys either rip it off or re-position it.. if there's any way i can help , private message me and i'll help you all i can. - paul.
