Benjamin NP2 .177 out of the box.. Wanted quiet.. seems a little loud.

Good Morning,
First post here. Just bought the above rifle and wanted to use it for nuisance pigeons around my back yard.. Shot only 5 shots so far using Gamo Whisper ammo 10.5 g
Should i give it a chance or take back for a more quiet rifle? Price point was around $210

It is probably still dieseling. It will take more than 5 shots to get that to stop. give it 50 to 100 at least before deciding about its loudness.

I have the same rifle.....(trail NP2 .177).
I broke mine down as soon as it arrived and cleaned it in/out. I cleaned the bore out very good prior to shooting.
That helped with the dieseling for the first few shots, Mine did quiet down after the break-in period. Try staying with heavy pellets (to keep them subsonic).

I remember the first shot I took in my backyard with my first break barrel.. It sounded like a .22 rimfire going off I put the gun away took the target down and hoped no one heard the shot.. I researched it and found out about the break in period.. 50+ shots... I took them in my basement shooting into a thick book..

Thanks everyone. Shot it and shot it some more.. Already growing on me. So far just one type of pellet like I said above. Any other recommendations to mix and match?

Same thing happened to my first break barrel. Took it outside, fired one shot, and it sounded like a 22LR went off. Ran back inside and shot the gun indoors for the rest of the time until the gun finally quieted down.

High power springers are not quiet. The advertising is very misleading in that regard.

They may quiet down a tiny bit, but I think that what really happens is that the shooter just acclimates to the noise.

For really quiet you have to go PCP.

I don't know about those particular pellets, but Gamo ammo is usually junk. Try some JSB heavy instead. Much more consistent and accurate.

Clean the barrel with a patch soaked in Goo-Gone and patch through from the breech with weed wacker line. Follow with a dry patch, then repeat until clean.

For pellets you want JSB you don"t want anything else. What ever your trying to do chose the jsb to do that and tune your rifle to shoot that pellet. This way is happiness.

JSB may shoot the best, but they may not too. Don't eliminate Crosman Premier, H&N, Air Arms or Berman. They're all nice and consistent. He just needs to find the heavy ones that his rifle likes.

Try the straightshooters.com sampler pack so you can find the best pellet for your gun. Its pretty great, I bought one myself for my current rifle when I first got it.

So, gave the gun to my 17 yr old and he has it dialed in. We are going to try JSB in a heavier weight, but we are using the pellets for ridding pigeons from our property. So far. we are on a pretty good average for only having this less than a week. Some of the birds are flying away after being hit. Answer could be a heavier pellet. Funny, now i'm going to be back in the market for a rifle for myself... My needs are simple.. Reliable, well made & quiet, might buy my own scope for an edge over jr. Looking around now.
