Benjamin Maximus Trigger Upgrade?

I finally have my sons full power .177 Maximus de tuned to shoot 10.5 ftlbs for 32 shots with an extreme spread of under 20 fps. My 20 yard 10 shot groups are amazing. My 30 yard groups have potential, but it seems the trigger gets the best of me at least 1 or 2 times in a 10 shot group. I know there are a handful of mods and triggers I can do/install, but does anybody have any experience doing this and what are your results? I'd like to get under a 2lb trigger pull if I could, but a 3-4lb pull would cut what it is now in half. This airgun has so much potential, I'd just hate for the trigger to ruin it.

I've read a lot about the Marauder trigger mod, but everything I've read just says it's better than the factory trigger. In my mind, that's not hard to do because the factory trigger sucks so bad. What I'm trying to find is actual numbers. How much better these mods actually are. If a Marauder trigger will give me a clean 4lb pull but relocating the pivot pin hole will give me a 2lb pull, I'd rather not waste the money buying a Marauder trigger. I'm thinking about just buying a pull gauge and doing these mods myself and then making a video on it. I have a Marauder, so robbing the trigger would be easy. I do believe a shim is required because the thickness of the Marauder tube is greater than the Maximus. It's just a lot of work that I'll have to do and I'd rather be shooting when my money pit of a house will allow me to 😃

Helimech,

The marauder trigger is a match grade trigger, it will set to justa few ounces ( or 4lb) safely.
I haven't had the striker/hammer out of mine yet so ..........................
If it is like the discovery you, need a thin plastic spacer between tube & trigger pack, and, you likely need to grind the hammer or buy a different one from crosman ( challenger part ?).

The marauder trigger is the best unit on any rig under $1,000 and well worth $50ish.

A lighter striker/hammer spring should make it somewhat easier to cock - but after all your tuning???? -. but wont make it "good".

i did the 2 screw trigger mod, the holes are already there. and a couple screws cost less than a dollar :)
gets rid of the long travel and creep and ends up pretty good for what youre working with.
and also added a lighter trigger return spring.

dont have a way to measure but from having many guns with known trigger weights id say its around 3-4 pounds.

I highly recommend the Marauder trigger.
I had a Katana which is basically a Discovery (which is the same platform as the Maximus) with a Marauder trigger. It was really nice. You can get the trigger and spacer as a set from Discosrus. You need the Gen 1 trigger group, gen 2 will not work. Look up 'disabling lawyer spring' which is a simple matter of bending a spring. This mod will allow you to set your trigger to 'telepathic', that is think 'now' and the trigger breaks.
I think you may need a different trigger guard to use the Marauder trigger.

Last week I installed the Baker brass trigger on my Maximus .22. The trigger is much more comfortable than stock and the new spring really reduces the pull.
Easily worth the $22.

A couple of notes:

1. The spring that Baker supplied with the trigger was crushed beyond use in shipping. I called them and they sent another one that was crushed but still usable.
2. The trigger install is not difficult but there are a lot of moving parts that can fall out. Also, that spring can pop out during install and disappear. You just need to be careful. The whole operation took me a little over an hour.

Here's a video I found on Youtube.

I'm sure a Mrod trigger would be better yet but I'm VERY pleased with the $22 Baker kit. I don't know exactly but it cuts the trigger pull at least in half and by experimenting with adjusting made it fine for ME. JMHO

As mentioned the marauder trigger can be taken down to a couple ounces but from the factory
most come set between 1 1/4lbs-2 1/2 lbs that is measuring three different trigger group all direct from crosman no adjustments made
installed with the proper spacer made by Lloyd@airgun lab and also available at discos r us.

They come with a light first stage a nice wall then a pretty clean break right out of the box which is my favorite trigger for anything but a dedicated target rig.
they are great but I went ahead and got a bakers trigger to test on my scale for comparison if I get a chance I'll see if I can install it this week and get some numbers
and do some shooting to get first impressions on it.

So I decided to do the cheapest mod that I could fix back to the stock setting if it didn't work. I drilled a hole to the right of the factory hole on the one linkage and moved the pivot pin to the far right adjustment hole. I ended up having to put electrical tape around the end of the linkage because there wasn't enough travel to fully release the sear link. I'd say it reduced the pull to around 2 lbs. It has a little creep and feels spongy, but it works and is predictable. My groups tightened up afterwords and that's what I was looking for. I'm glad I could fix it with no money out of pocket. Here is my new video review of my Maximus.

I put a Marauder trigger (and Challenger trigger guard) on my Maximus, and it was really easy. I had to remove about 1/2" of plastic from the front of the trigger area on the Maximus stock, but that was super easy with a mini hacksaw and file. I used a spacer from Baker Airguns to get the trigger aligned properly, and it was well worth the expense. The Challenger trigger guard fits onto the Marauder trigger assembly by tapping the hole closest to the trigger with a 10-32 tap. It takes a 10-32 3/8" bolt to secure the guard.
