Belding fun ( Graphic )

My buddy and I went on a 3 day Belding ground squirrel shoot in norther California. He was shooting a Impact Mk2 .25 cal with NSA 29.5 slugs at about 983 FPS. I was shooting my Wildcat MK3 .25 cal with NSA 29.5 slugs at about 974 FPS. All I can say is the 29.5 slugs are devastating on the ground squirrels. Non stop shooting for hours, what a blast. We probably shot atleast a 1000 slugs each. What a blast, can't wait to do it again next week and the week after.

I think a 177 or 22 would work! It’s awesome to have a target trick environment! What is the exact model/make of that portable table?

If your talking slugs, yes a .177 or .22 would work. But .25 slugs are more fun in my opinion. The tables are custom made by me using plywood and portable miter saw stands. Yes it is awesome having a target rich environment. Most of our shots were at 70 yards or less with some out to 150 yards.

See the little ones are out in force !! They were just showing up @ 2 1/2 weeks ago when i was up for 3 days with some buddies whacken em !!

I was using my .177 slugger while the winds were low and earlier in the day when there a tad less skiddish. From there .17 HMR all the way .... Blow-Em-Up !!!!!!!!!

Good fun for sure ... been doing so for quite a few years now

Ya my buddy and I have been going for a few years also. We were surprised at how big the young ones are already. Last year at this time they were just coming out of the den. Looks to be a banner year to shoot Beldings. Especially since we got a few more permissions this year.

Love playing Wack a Squirrel with a airgun.

Mr.grimm,

You and your partner are "SUPER SPREADERS" of lead poisoning!!! I mean that in the most positive way. Those critters serve no good purpose that I can think of, except maybe for sharpening your marksmanship skills.

Thanks for the post and pictures, good shooting, oh and very, very nice equipment. I bet the rancher/farmer are thankful for the arrival of the "MASTER BLASTERS".

Good luck with your pesting, stay healthy and safe

The "graphic" warning is usually ignored because they are not that graphic. Your pics are GRAPHIC and I like it!

The canopy and custom tables are awesome and necessary. The only things I would add to your cool equipment setup, and I use when shooting in remote areas, is a Honda generator and Hill EC 3000 compressor. Love the freedom of unlimited air with a generator and compressor!

It's only 6 hours to the OR - CA border for me and I may head that way soon. K-Falls perhaps and South.

Air isn't an issue. We have 5 60 minute and 5 45 minute SCBA tanks.

Nice! You sit there drinking a beverage in the shade, snacking on goodies and tethered?

Exactly. A 60 minute tank is more than enough for a full day of hot and heavy shooting for both of us. We just take a tank for each day we go. Usually 2 or 3 tanks.

I really like shooting tethered with my SCUBA tank and Artemis PP700SA. Don't have SCBA so that's not an option.

The GS permissions are a gem, for sure. A couple weeks back I drove 370 miles round trip into Eastern Oregon and did NOT secure a new permission AND my old shooting grounds hasn't seen a GS in many years. I saw EXACTLY ONE GS the whole day and it ran across the road onto unknown property.

It's going to require an overnight trip to secure new permissions because there's so much driving, door knocking and looking for property owners!

I'll give you a BIG HINT ..... These squirrels while at times numerous are only dumb when there young and naive having zero clue who there enemy's are ? ( Young and dumb )

Earlier in the season and next years survivors etc .. get real smart and very wary and getting shots at them many times is an ordeal of 80+++ yards for months on end.

here is the HINT ... setting up a big obvious canopy your presents is known BIG TIME !!! You will at any other time of year ( Absent of young & dumb ) have a hell of a time getting many up close with realistic AG range shots set up as such.

Sun protection clothing, brimmed hat, compact binoculars and supplies in a small backpack ..... WALKING THE FIELDS and sitting down on a tri-stool w/ backrest and some shooting sticks is FAR & AWAY the most productive way to hunt these critters IMO. Even then you need to move ever 45 min - hour as those within range get spooked.

As one whom has done this for years ... wisdom shared.

Your hint is dually noted. But my buddy has some health issues, so walking and stalking is not an option. Also we are their to relax and have fun. We don't use the gazebo all the time but when we due it has not made a noticeable difference, even in June after the first cutting. The main impact on shooting is the eagles, hawks, seagulls, ravens and crows. Coyotes are the only thing skittish of use. We shoot in February to June. We just wish we had a hot girl to serve us our drinks and load our magazines.
