Tuning Beeman R9 tune kit?

Thumper-

When I’m thinking tune kit for springer, Vortek name just comes up first also a quick search will always come up Vortek. I’ve heard Vmach and Maccari.

also Vortek pg2/3 is the only kit I’ve work with on previous R9 that I’ve sold a while back. I’ve only did it once.

what do you recommend to tune a R9? From what supplier

ARH & Vortek both make good kits.

I've mainly used just ARH springs and OEM piston seals or seals purchased on ebay from Australia. ARH piston seals tend to be on the large size and need to be fitted properly - requiring more patience than I have.

Used Vortek springs when I wanted more power, you may need to close spring ends or clip a few coils to get desired shot cycle/velocity. otherwise went entirely with ARH for everything else. After all, max power isn't the answer in most cases.

Also, use ARH lubes... if you have many springers - makes sense to tune everything yourself; otherwise a kit is best for a less "hands on shooter'. .

Since I have a lathe, I can make spring guides and top hats that are available in kits, that's why I've never bought a kit.

The other year I ordered a Vortek PG3 Steel High Output kit for my HW98 (R9 with target wood). Installed it, and it was shooting 10.8 FPE. No such thing as shooting a group anymore, pellets were flying in every direction. I pulled the Vortek kit out and put it side-by-side with the stock spring and the so-called “High Output” kit was 3 inches shorter than the stock spring. I eMailed Vortek and never got a response. It was my first and last purchase from Vortek. Stock configuration was 15-16 FPE stacking pellets at 30 yards, I couldn’t believe my eyes, but the twang and vibration was too annoying. I have a HW97 with a nice V.Mach that I installed back in the day, but I can’t find that brand on the market anymore tho.

I am not looking for max power for this tune, I'm looking for smooth cycling and help with accuracy. I would like to power to be near/around factory.

Any recommendation, I am listening!!!

Marrari kits in R9 are very smooth and have slightly more power than stock. They are smoother than Vortek kits, whether it be PG2,3 or 4. I have tuned at least 7 or 8 R9/HW95's and I will say. my favorite was an R9 .177cal tune with a Maccari kit and Vortek piston seal. If I bought an R9 tomorrow that is the exactly what I would put in it hands down. The Vortek seals are better IMO and you will get a slight power increase without losing smoothness in the shot cycle. The Maccari kits are smooth and he has more experience back in the day when springers ruled airguns than anyone I remember. I have had 3 airguns that I should have never sold, but I went back to school when I was older and decisions had to be made.

1. Paul Watts Beeman R1 22cal. He tuned it to 780 fps with 14.3 grain pellet

2. Maccari R9 .20cal tuned by Maccari himself. (It was tuned to 695 fps with CP 14.3's.

3. RWS 350 .177cal tuned by Maccari at 14.5 foot pounds and it was smooth as glass.

I tried both kits in my .22 HW95. Settled on the ARH spring kit with the VAC seal from Vortek. The OEM seal fit far too loose and the gun was blowing through the stroke making low power, jumpy and poor accuracy. Vac seal has most consistent spread. The ARH seal worked fine.

I tried the Vortek because so many liked theirs and I've used them in a Diana 34 and Diana 38 with good results. I'll stick to the ARH
