Beeman R1 and the need for a decent scope

Good evening everyone,

I've got a friend that's in need of a decent scope for his Beeman R1 in .177 and he's an older gentleman. I blessed him with this rifle many years ago and the old scope that I gave him with the rifle has given up the ghost. I thought about the Center Point 4-16x40 AO and I also thought about Hawke Sport Optics Vantage 4-12x50 AO or the Hawke Sport Optics Airmax 3-9x40 AO Rifle Scope. What do you guys and girls think because he's desperate having problems with squirrels and rabbits in his garden?

I have the Hawke Airmax 3x9 40mm AO on a Benjamin Trail NP and it is a great scope. I also got one for my son and he likes it. No problems with them in 2 years.

Thanks Deerstalker because I've got a UTG 3-9x40 AO IR on my HW95 and I was just curious as to which scope would be a decent scope for his rifle.

+1 on what Deerstalker said. The Hawks scopes are much better then the utg/counterpoint brand. Check out Joe Rhea video on the utg/Hawks comparison. Just saying.

Unless you get a Diana ZR or similar mount, the Vantage likely won't hold up on his R1 as they aren't springer rated. While I'm usually in the minority, I'm a fan of the Airmax scopes and own 7, 5 of those mounted on springers and I've never had any problems with them. If the day comes that I do, they have a lifetime warranty.

Never owned anything UTG so can't honestly say anything about them other than I know lots of shooters recommend them and they also have a llifetime warranty. In the case of either, keep the receipts in case they happen to want one should you need to use the warranty for either.

shambozzie and scp52, thanks a million for your responses because I know that if you buy once, you only have to cry once. With Hawk optics, it cost more but for the money you definitely get more.

The Vantage is springer rated but only up to 12fpe. (check Pyramyd Air or Hawke for this info) The Airmax line is very nice and if $ is an issue front focus is a bit cheaper than side focus in the same Airmax line. If mildots are not needed or wanted I have numerous R1's with Bushnell Trophy 4-12x40 on them with zero issues.

Thanks DualMagMike, that's what I've always used on my springers in times past but seeing that I'm only into PCPs and I still have my "prized springers", that's where my focus has been. The Bushnell Trophy has always been one of my favorite scopes for my springers but I didn't want to scare my older friend off with the price, so I started here.

I have an R1 with one of the 16" UTG scopes on it that works very well. Was it me, I'd avoid the Bug Buster. In my opinion, the R1 can take advantage of the longer focal plane length to realize easier and more consistent accuracy.

This is the UTG that I have. It's been on two different RWS 34's and a Sig ASP20. All notorious for killing scopes. No problems yet with this scope. It now sits on my .22cal M34 which is a 17.6 FPE rifle.

Thanks, I've owned and stull own some UTG scopes and I find them to work just fine for their intended purposes. I have no complaints but just wondering what would make a god replacement scope for a friends R1.

I had the Hawke Airmax 3-9x40 and had vertical point of impact issues with the scope. Hawke's warranty services are great and they sent me a new one. I never mounted the new one and sold it on Ebay.
