BCSA (Binghamton, NY) - September 9th, 2023 Match Report

Broome County Sportsmens Association (BCSA) Field Target Match Report

Well, the early forecast for this months match was a slightly worse carbon copy of last month. The early weather forecast was calling for a 70% chance of thunderstorms. We had quite a few inquiries as to the match status. I sent out an email letting them know we were still progressing forward. Friday morning the email was sent that the match was a definite go! It surprised a few, but they were happy it was on!

Many Pictures for the day including the ones below can be seen here: https://imgur.com/a/hGPj9Mc

We had 15 people on hand for the day! Paul Varney, Brian Wagner and John Eroh made trips out to the range this time around! For Paul and Brian, it was their first time (and most likely not their last) and for John, it’s been a while since he’s been here, but pretty sure the thought of High Power field target was the driving force behind his decision! The rain and thunderstorms never materialized and the day consisted of calm to some tricky little winds with mild temps and slightly high humidity. The far back targets on the left hand side of the range in the pictures above were the worst. Heard a few grumbles on those. The wind was light at the muzzle, but some had over 2 inches of movement at the target. It was every once in a while, so you needed to be on your toes and be vigilantly watching your wind flag!

The course of fire was 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane. 2 shots per target with the shooting order being left, middle, right. There was also the usual 1 standing lane and 1 kneeling lane. The stats for the days 60 shot course are as follows:

Had 2 cold lines for the match One was to check a target which was a split and the other was due to the top block of the double stacked concrete blocks for the Paul’s Custom Targets Egret was starting to twist due to pulling to reset. We put back out the uncooperative gnome from last month’s match. The linkage was replaced and it behaved well throughout the match!

Nathan Thomas was able to lock in high score for the day with a 51 out of 60 shooting WFTF Piston. Following Nathan was Brian VanLiew who was shooting Open Piston and ended up with a 48 out of 60. Rich Sarama was third overall but first in Hunter PCP with a 45 out of 60. Behind those three were the rest of us. There was a group of 7 with scores between 44 and 40. All the scores can be seen below.

After the conclusion of the rifle match, everyone jumped in and helped pick up and pack away the rifle targets and pull the strings for the High Power targets. With everyone either pulling in the unused targets, winding strings, pulling strings for the high power targets……..it looked like a well oiled efficient machine!! Thank You All!

Before the start of the High Power match, we had the drawing to determine our 50/50 winner. This time we enlisted the help of Jennifer Rogers t o be the official ticket puller! After mixing up the tickets in the bucket, the winning ticket was drawn. The winner this time around was Brian Sarama!!!

High Power Field Target Time!

The course of fire was 6 lanes with 5 lanes having 4 targets per lane and 1 standing lane having 2 targets in it. All lanes were shot left to right with a total of 44 shots. The course stats were as follows.

After 3 matches on our modified Gamo/homemade targets, they continue to impress. Possibly 1 false falls with a faceplate hit this time around, but that will be looked into an remedied as necessary!

8 people participated in the High Power Ft match this time around. Things went trouble free with no cold lines…just plain old fun knocking down targets! After the match was finished, everyone remaining jumped in and we made super quick work of the cleanup! Tearing down the canopies and packing away all the targets and blocks! All the help is GREATLY appreciated!

Only 1 more match for 2023!! Where did the time go??
