I know this defeats the purpose of having an airgun and doing pesting, I think you can use water diluted vinegar and put it in a disposable water container and hang it on the tree. crows and starling doesn't like the smell, maybe it will work for you.

This is a pretty massive tree, would require a few containers all over a very tall tree. Would get diluted when it rains anyway, if I don’t fall and break my neck trying to do that. 

Besides, the nuts are no good, tree is diseased. But taking them thins down the population and I eat a few of them.

That one on the bottom looks like he has been shot before an old wound? Looking at the shot placement it's hard to believe that he would have survived but they are tough little rascals!
