Barrel Cleaning

I'm starting to get some fliers and want to give my barrel a deeper cleaning than I usually do, which is Hope's cleaning oil pulled though on patches about every 100 - 200 rounds. More often during a competition.
I don't want to go as far as using bore paste. Am a bit worried about overdoing it and ruining the barrel. Here's my question:
Can anyone recommend a cleaning solution that would clean deeper than the Hope's?

To clean a problem steel barrel I recommend scrubbing the bore with a brass or bronze wire brush on a one piece rod. I don't pay much attention to the solvent because with the brush you just have to flush out the debris. WD-40 works fine for me. Finish with patches on a string.

I also avoid abrasives. Steel is harder than brass. Abrasives are harder than steel and can potentially do damage. If you must use abrasives thoroughly clean the barrel first and use the abrasive to polish out tight spots in the bore.
