Badly redesigned bipod..UTG recon

The first gen had 2 big screws one in the front one in the rear...you lock them up you eliminate the movement..

Second gen are badly redesigned they only have one adjuster on one side..

Ones that leverage is damaged by use it will no longer set the bipod in a fixed position..the bipod is unusable it will not even hold the gun ..up .. new gen of recon no good...just in case..

Mercado I've had an old school first gen for years with no problems I set one screw snug so only have to tighten one for lockup with a coin. When I was purchasing a second recon I saw these one pointers and gladly when old school again with no problems since.

Can you disassemble, drill and tap for a set screw? 

I've done this on knock-offs and even welded them to a fixed (wanted) position. I hate wiggly stuff.

SHOMER... I have 3 of the old ones to .. the have worked great .. no problems at all ..

MikeHunt... I assume that maybe if you can remove the tip of the adjustment screw..maybe is only glued..then you could keep rotating the one screw until it looks... I could not try it because I returned for a refund .. I purchased the bipod used I could not have more than a few months of use when I purchased a few days ago... n already it didn't lock.. when my other 3 have atleast 4 years..so far without a problem..

I had the same issue with my recon bipod. After some use, the throw lever would no longer lock the tilt/rotate. I was able to remove the lever and rotate it to a new position and now it locks up solid. Disassembly looks harder than it is. The cap on the lever unscrews allowing access to nut that the lever sits on. I used vice grips to unscrew the cap. Once removed you, loosen the grub screw on the lever and remove the lever. Then rotate it one position and then put it all back together. Hope this makes sense and helps.

I have both the new style with the lever, and the older 2 screw type. So far I’ve been using the new style on my RTI, and have had no problems with locking…..yet.
I have tried the carbon fiber bipod above, but could not adjust cant with the guns weight on it and found it too frustrating, so I returned it.

Here is what I did to the screws on my gen 1 Recon.

Soldered a couple nickels to the screw slots - works great..

Check out the "Impressive Bipod for under $70" post for info on the UUQ bipod. Side by side comparison with the Recon. I got one and love it for bench work.

Sorry for the bad pics. I didn't have much time. You may need to heat the cap a bit the first time you remove it. A lighter should work. It unscrews counter clockwise.

Is it pretty smooth operation? Overall fit and finish seem good?

I have to say that I have been using my UTG recon (the redesigned version) for over a year now, switching between various rifles and have had absolutely no problems with it. While I can see the theoretical argument that it will eventually fail, my actual hard use experience with it has been excellent.
