Which gun do you have? The multi piece oem has tolerance stacking issues for me on my m3 and a 1 piece helped resolve that. Admittedly the problem only arose after I had to take take the gun apart to install a heavy hammer.

I learned never buy a 1st year fx. Wait for problems to show or the inevitable new model update and you can find the issues. The m4 got a new rail.

I would venture to say no a backrail isn't "needed" but could be a thing still depending on your wishes.
