Average FPS

Hey everyone,

So I am new to the airgun sport and after doing my research, I decided to pick up an FX Maverick Sniper from UA. I decided on the Maverick because I felt it was a better introduction rifle and easier to tune than the Impact, plus the price point was within my budget Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase, and shooting it has been a blast. I wanted to ask those with more experience about what one should expect with an average FPS when shooting pellets. I've seen Impacts on YT with a very consistent FPS only deviating around 5-10 FPS. I'm using .22 FX 25.4gr pellets with my regulators tuned to 150/125 and PW7, and my FPS is all over the place. I used the FX chron and my FPS was between 851-888 after adjusting the microwheel. My groupings were decent, but I couldn't get any two shots between 5-10 FPS of each other. Is this common for pellets, and if so, will using slugs improve the FPS deviation? If I left out anything important, please don't hesitate to point it out. I'm new to all this and there is still a lot of things I am trying to figure out.

Thank you guys
Alonzo

If you haven’t already done so, the first step with any regulated PCP is to adjust the hammer spring tension to be in harmony with the regulator setpoint. To do that, start by finding the velocity plateau…the maximum achievable velocity. Keep stepping up on the power wheel (which is the hammer spring tension) until the velocity no longer increases.

And then once you’ve found the velocity plateau, dial it back to the velocity knee which is about 97% of the maximum. So let’s say it tops out at 920fps, dial it back to about 920*0.97 = 890fps.

When adjusted in this manner, the extreme spread will tighten up. If for some reason it’s still not acceptable, we can help you guide you toward other things to check. Whatever the case, it’s not a pellets vs slugs thing. Slugs are more sensitive, not less.

By the way, regarding the first part where you’re finding the plateau, you want to have at least a couple of clicks remaining on the power wheel when the velocity tops out. If you get to the highest setting and the velocity is still climbing, that will need to be addressed first. Unlikely that would be the case for a 125 bar setpoint but I wanted to bring it to your attention just in case.

Thank you both for your responses.

Here are screenshots of 10 shot strings from PW3-7 from left to right. I don't know what type of fps that I should expect with 125 bar, but I never got over 900 fps except for two shots that came close at the start of the PW7 shot string (886 & 884).

As you can see, the FPS is not very consistent in any setting except for the PW6. I started taking around 10s between shots starting at PW5, which seemed to help at PW6 & 7. I topped off the tank prior to this sesh and I have not made any adjustment since taking these shots. At this point, I am waiting to see if anyone has any recommendations before I start adjusting things.

Thank you ahead of time.

Hey Hawk,

I also feel like the gun needs more power for the 25gr pellets, but I will continue to shoot it for a bit more before I start tinkering.

What is interesting to me, AEAC posted his Maverick tunning guide and his gun is averaging around 883 with much lower reg pressures and it's a .25cal (see below). I understand he has been doing this much longer than me, but it seems my gun is working harder with less performance.

I've posted my reg pressure below again for reference, but it seems like his gun is performing much better than mine at lower settings.

So after messing with the chroni distance, it looks like the shot strings improved drastically. Originally, I had the unit mounted under the end of the barrel, but I mounted it on the side pic rail and it seems to do the job.

I shot around 40 rounds before the fps started to stabilize around the 900 mark. The tank reached 100 bar so I topped it off to 250 bar, but for some reason, the fps started to drop again before coming back up. Oddly enough, the fps seems to improve the closer it gets to the first regs working pressure of 150 bar. I ran out of pellets, but I would assume the fps would continue to increase the closer the tank pressure gets to the reg pressures. The good news is that I averaged around 875 fps with the smallest SD showing up once the tank was under 150 bar. Things are moving in the right direction, but im confused why a full tank would decrease the fps instead of increasing it.

Tank around 140 bar

Current settings
Regs 150/125, PW 7 with an avg FPS of around 860

With your reg settings your speeds should be a lot higher. It does look like you do not have enough hammer, that being said, try his tunning guide, not every gun is the same, but it should get you in the ball park, and you should get a much better idea on how to tune it.

Thanks for your input Jace, I'll play with a hammer next.

Do you happen to know how to reset the hammer? For example, if I turn the internal hammer spring completely CW, will the screw hit an endpoint or will I end up loosening up some internal mechanism that will require me to disassemble the gun?

Things are moving in the right direction, but im confused why a full tank would decrease the fps instead of increasing it.
Regulators aren't perfect...they produce slightly elevated output pressure when the input pressure is highest. The velocity being slightly less on a full tank is another clue the hammer spring tension is not sufficient.

I myself have not tunned the mavericks, I've fully disassembled them and reassembled them but that's about it. Wish I could help more.

It just needs tuned. You can email FX to ask for any tunes try have archived for your setup. Keep looking around, watching videos on tuning, that's all it is. I have a crown for this purpose, less to mess with and it takes some trying to get there. Everyone's settings are different but could get you close. Good luck with the 25gr, you will need it. If your shooting at 100yds, they are super finicky.

Might as well put in my two pesos-
With the maverick and wildcat platforms, on the left side connected to the titanium cocking rod, is a small 1” x 3/4” x 1/4” black cocking block that’s attached to your trigger arm linkage.

That block is anchored to that silver rod with two M4 grub screws. New, used, doesn’t matter, those screws will work itself loose and you will lose your pellet probe set alignment with the transfer port air passages. Switch those two grub screws out, one at a time, to M4 x 6 torx socket head screws. Use locktite on the screw threads.

Grub screws can’t be tightened up like a torx socket head can, so this will ensure that you never suffer the sudden loss of power or poor extreme spreads.

I’m not saying this is your problem currently, but it will help avoid a headache later on
