Avenger regulator settings

My Avenger in 22 seems to perform better at 2000 psi. I installed an AESWEED bottle adapter with an HPA reg, 4500- 3000psi. My Avenger only sees 2700psi on the rifle and a quicker recovery of 2000psi to the rifle regulator. I'm still testing and so far, very happy with the results. It's a laser with the 22.95-grain redesign JSB.

I think it works better at a lower bottle pressure because the regulator is working less. At 4200psi it has to regulate down to ~1800psi, and that work load lessens as the bottle pressure gets closer to the reg set pressure. So in turn, were you to increase the reg set pressure it might be more consistent at higher bottle pressures. This is why FX and the like are using 2 regs. The first knocks down most of the work load from the bottle pressure; and the second reg can be more consistent because it only needs to control a few dozen Bar of difference. I added a second bottle to my Avenger like Wendell did, but I have only shot a few mags through it so far. My first reg is ~2650psi and the stock Avenger reg is ~2200psi but has some creep.

Can anyone with experience on the 22 cal Avenger tell me why the regulator preforms better as the fill pressure drops down to the 2200 psi range
It would help us to know what specifically is meant by “the regulator performs better.” As in the gauge settles to a more consistent pressure, or you observe better accuracy, or...?

FWIW I have the regulator on my .22 set to 1700psi, and the hammer spring did not have sufficient adjustment range to back it off to the velocity knee. The result was excessive muzzle blast and mediocre groups. Removing one coil from the spring allowed me to get it adjusted to about 97% of max velocity. Air usage is much better and groups improved noticeably.

Also, the Avenger regulator is notorious for scattered issues with pressure creep and elevated output pressure when the reservoir is charged to the upper registers (above 3500psi or so). Keeping the fill pressure down a bit masks these issues.

I want to make a correction on the pellets I shoot from my Avenger is 25.39 grain instead of 22.95. Even though the Baracuda's 21.14 grains are good too. I put my bottle reg on my 22 which was the first of the Avengers. I fault the creepy reg syndrome like a lot of owners. I was lucky that I was able to polish away the dimple from the Delrin seal and the reg has been stable since I fixed it.
Those 4500 psi regs come configured in different settings from 3000 psi down also. It's all on AE Sweede website.

Thank you for your response. What I meant by preforms better was watching my groups tighten up and seeing the shot string on my Fx chronograph flatten out. I have been filling to 3600psi for a while now even though I could fill higher. But I noticed a big difference consistently when the fill pressure dropped to the 2200 range. I tried setting my regulator to 2200 because it seemed to be where it liked to be but theres not many shots available and the regulator drops before the fill pressure hits 2200. I'm beginning to wonder if its defecive.

I have been considering a solution like you and Wendell have installed.Did you get a Ninja regulator from Hajimoto or somewhere else and which bottle adaptor? 2600 to 2700 seems logical to me.

I havent pulled my regulator yet to check the derlin seal. I like to have replacement parts on hand before I start working on things. I will check eith Air Venturi( Stacey) soon.

Yeah I bought the Hajimoto stuff. Ninja reg @2600psi but shows about 2650psi on the gauge, an AE Swede bottle adapter, and a Doux Plenum upgrade. Even with the reg creep my rifle is crazy accurate so far. I might try to fix the reg creep if it doesnt seal in on its own. A lot of Avenger owners have said theirs sealed up after a couple hundred rounds. Im working on the stock now to help support the bottle and regulator.

PA had the Avenger reg kits last week. I ordered one for my guns. The poppet leak test is usually done with a balloon over the barrel. If it stays limp, it's not leaking.
I've had one on backorder for weeks. Just talked to pyramyd air customer service today about a problem with my nomad 2 compessor and they never mentioned the reg kit being in stock. I did talk to Stacey at Air Venturi and she confirmed the reg kits for the 17 cal and 25 cal are the same parts except for the bolt probe orings.

Mongoose,

How'd you find a bottle with the right threads that was rated over 3k psi? I was going to do a Ninja reg but they are 5/8 or whatever not metric 18.5 or whatever so it wouldn't work with an 'eBay special' aluminum bottle. All the bottles I found were the metric threads so I went with a 4.5k in, 3k out Chinese reg. Closer to 2,800 psi out, but that's good cause it came with a 3k burst disk lol

Also, what are your overall thoughts on the dual reg + power plenum? I just installed both on mine but don't have any pellets through it yet. Only like 50 pellets through the gun overall.

Lastly, I'd recommend measuring your bottle with calipers before ordering a bottle barrel band. My bottle is 60mm but the AE Swede is 61. I thought it would clamp well enough with those screws but nope there's a mm of play. Dadr-232 on ebay sells them in whatever size you need. Like $45 shipped and the barrel part seems longer than Swede. Mine to arrive soon.

I ordered the m18 treaded bottle from eBay 0.37l bottle rated at 4500 psi. I then went to AE Sweede's website to get the bottle regulator adapter and it will have instructions or a web link that you can go to on eBay for the regulator that you want. AE Sweede has the Avenger regulator repair kits also in 22 the last time that I looked. I got the 3000psi regulator for my application and tested the output before installing it in the rifle.
