Air Venturi Avenge-X .22 Barrel Concerns

I inspected the barrel after a couple hundred rounds and there appears to be some rough spots around the circumference of the bore just past the breech, and also the last 1/4" or so at the muzzle, as well as a couple other spots in the bore. The non-existent crown looks pretty shoddy too. Also, the transfer port hole on the bottom of the barrel appears to be slightly oblong with what looks like bite marks from a drill bit. I can see where the pellets have knocked down burrs from that hole too. I've attached a few crappy pics. The fuzzy stuff is what got caught from the cleaning patches.
Will some basic bore polishing and deburring help? Or is this something I should attempt to get replaced?

This raises a good question. Should we check and possibly re-crown the barrels of all of our PCP‘s?

And all the topic, what is the consensus about whether we should clean all PCP bores before first shooting?

And how about honing the bores? As I remember, firearms people (of which I am one) can use special bullets to hone bores. I don’t know how effective these are.

I do. The workmanship of most airgun barrels leaves something to be desired. Inexpensive ones particularly so, and frequently even the expensive ones.

Barrel crowning - brass screw method
Barrel troubleshooting and accurizing for the DIYer
Bore lapping
I was hoping you'd chime in lol.
I want to try to brass screw method, but I can't seem to find any regular phillips head screws without the flathead slot cut across it. I'm assuming that's not ideal for this operation...

If you are contemplating replacing the barrel I see that as an opertunity to learn and trial and error. I would try one step at a time and check. Maybe lightly polish barrel and clean extra good. Shoot 10 to 20 rounds and see if there is improvement. If not try to crown the barrel. After all you will learn and hopefully make it better and if not think of the experience learned. Ive noticed most airgunners are never totaly satisfied until we try to improve power acuracy shot count or whatever until we go too far and have to replace lol but we all learn good luck.

That's my plan! What makes this hobby so appealing to me is all the tinkering that goes along with it.

I did my .25 avenger. Polish, open barrel port drilled transfer port crown barrel better accureacy more fps on heavy pellets only downside is less shots per fill. Lol more power more air

Nice. I was thinking about trying to clean up the barrel port on mine and maybe going slightly oversize, but I haven't done enough research yet to feel confident about it.

My avenger was my first pcp last summer and i watched lots of u tube videos and the info provided on this sight so i figured why not try. worse case scenario i would wreck a $ 350 gun. Ive made a ton more costly mistakes in the course of learning something pluss it was fun lol

Good thing the barrels for the X are relatively cheap - which leads us back to the start of the problem lol. This is also my first PCP, and I've only had her for a few weeks, so I'm not trying to screw it up too badly yet!

Well, after basically hours of trying to smooth the leade, there's still a bit of resistance pushing the pellet through and smearing is evident around the whole pellet head (even down to 5.51). What concerns me is that it looks like the leade/rifling is off-center. The rifling is thicker on half of it when looking down the breech. Also, after attempting to crown with the brass screw, I could only get half the rifling exposed (the "cog" if looking down the muzzle).
I guess I'll be contacting AV about it, but probably no chance of getting it replaced since I already messed with it.

Thoughts?

Was the gun accurate as is, if so I wouldnt of messed with it..lots of barrels have imperfections and still shoot dead nuts accurate. If my barrel is accurate I dont care if it looks like a gravel road on the inside just that it hits where its supposed to.
It took 15 replies to finally get the right one. This hobby is full of guys who push guys to do things they are not capable of with inadequate equipment. We only hear about the polish, leade and shade tree crown jobs that didn’t hurt anything. But there are plenty of guns that get screwed up. We rarely hear about them. It takes a desperate man looking for parts to come clean about what internet magic caused him to screw up his gun.

On the flip side. If your gun shoots like crap, has no warranty, or financially it won’t bother you to have to buy another replacement, go for it. Tinkering is fun, but have a solid backup plan. First backup plan would be a replacement barrel. Guys say they are available. Are they? Try to buy one first to confirm. Then get out your drill and screw.

Oops, I missed that you already attempted being a Google gunsmith. I’ve seen plenty of chinaguns that the bore is not centered in the barrel. But they still shot good. You never said if the gun actually shot horrible for those hundreds of rounds or if your bore scope is responsible for your unhappiness. You said barrels are relatively cheap. Order one. If it shoots good, keep your bore scope in its case and have fun shooting. Tinker with your tuning. Not stuff that you don’t have the proper equipment for.

It wasn't bad at 25yds, but I was having issues trying to get a number of different pellets to pattern at 50yds. Also got dirty pretty quickly which really effected the consistency. The pellets were getting hung up pretty bad at the muzzle too - took quite a bit of force before the pellet would pop through.

Sorry, I failed to mention that it was not shooting well at 50yds. 4-5 inch+ groups with several different pellets isn't ideal. I also couldn't get lighter pellets (15-19gr) to shoot accurately at 25yds for some reason.
After shaping/polishing the crown, it shoots 15 and 18gr JSBs great at 25 yards now. I only had a short time to test before the storms rolled in though.
