Was I not exhausted from fighting everything Technology related in Ronny World going haywire for the last three weeks, I might apologize for this match report coming later than usual. However I won’t apologize for Technology gone haywire. From what I can tell, HAYWIRE is what Technology does!
The August TEXtreme competition(s) being 20 and 12 foot pound field target allowing any airgun in either class falling within the respective power restriction, competitors were also allowed to purchase two scorecards if they liked. They liked. In fact if two shooters’ 12 foot pound pistols hadn’t sprang leaks at the last minute, every shooter would have shot two scorecards.
My priority in setting the courses being 20 and 12 foot pound pistols with very high Troyer difficulties in both cases, interestingly only two shooters contested 20 FP Pistol on the 40.6T average course. Also interesting (since it’s usually not the case), four shooters shot 20 Foot Pound Rifle class on the same course (that translated to a low, 25.8 Rifle Troyer).
Four competitors also took advantage of the opportunity to exercise their 12 Foot Pound Pistols on the high, 39.1 Pistol Troyer course.
If you think describing the opportunities available to shooters by allowing them to shoot one or two scorecards with rifles, pistols, or both on (essentially) two courses, imagine the challenge of squadding those opportunities.
The things I do for my shooters!
Strangely, the first priority of Extreme Pistol Field Target had the least number of shooters (two). Derrick Wall captured top bragging rights in 20 Foot Pound Pistol with an excellent 39/40 score. Matter of fact he was clean the whole match going into not only his last target on his last lane, but his very LAST SHOT.
Unfortunately his last target boasted 'far and away' the highest Troyer difficulty of the day. “How high”, you’re wondering.
The 1” kill-zone dove at 38 yards on Lane 4 is a high difficulty for rifles at 38T; WAY OFF THE CHARTS for pistol at a whopping 59.9 Troyer!
You’d think a squad-mate with over a decade of Field Target experience might have absorbed some amount of Field Target etiquette along the way. You’d be wrong. Upon Derrick’s last shot on his last target of his last lane not dropping the OFF THE CHARTS DIFFICULTY 1” dove at 38 yards, his squad-mate burst out laughing!
I’ve long suspected Derrick Wall super-human or space alien, but now realize my mistake. Any regular human wouldn’t have taken such a gauche reaction from a squad-mate at such an emotionally taxing moment without an extreme reaction to it.
But not Derrick.
Those unfamiliar with coming THAT close to achieving one of the rarest achievements in Field Target can’t imagine the let-down of missing that goal on the last shot. Suffice to say it’s exponentially more depressing than otherwise.
That Derrick came that close to a perfect score on such a high-difficulty course is evidence enough he is super-human. That his squad-mate survived such a breach of etiquette is proof-positive Derrick Wall is a saint
(sorry D, these are the closest emojis I could find
), who only contests Field Target competitions to demonstrate how humans should act.
DW’s super-human 39/40 score was posted with his .20 Brocock Commander topped with 4-18X Discovery scope, and shooting 13.73 grain JSB pellets 805 FPS. Phenomenal shooting, Derrick!
I’d thought my 34/40 Extreme Pistol score a pretty good one, but had to settle for the highlight of my match day being cleaning both shots on the 59.9T dove. Correction- the highlight of my day was standing in the shadow of a saint.
However I did manage to prevail for the 12 Foot Pound Pistol class win with a 31/40. My Crosman 187 pistol conversion shoots 8.4 grain JSBs at 760 FPS, and wears a 4-12X Bushnell Legend scope.
Of four shooters in 12 FP Pistol, Jim Clarke came second with a 30/40 score. JC (see what I did there, after all that ‘saint’ stuff?) shot a Brocock Atomic XR pistol topped with a 10-50X Hawke scope, pushing 13.43 pellets 630 FPS. Good shooting, Jim.
Billy Davison won the 20 Foot Pound Rifle class, turning in a perfect 40/40 scorecard. His .20 caliber RAW rifle shoots 13.73 grain JSBs 803 FPS, and wears an S3 scope. Nice shooting, BD!
Jim Clarke’s 38/40 in 20 FP Rifle was good for his second Second of the day. His SIghtron SIII scoped Redwolf shoots 13.43 JSBs at 815 FPS. Good shooting, Jim.
Weather permitting, our September 6 & 7 TEXtreme competitions will be Rifle and Pistol Extreme Field Target matches (respectively), with a prize list of $1,000 in AoA gift certificates. Hope to see Y’all then.
Happy Shooting,
