August 6 TEXtreme Bench-Rest Silhouette Match Report

Six fanatical airgunners braved the Texas Heat Wave 0f 2022 to contest our August TEXtreme Bench-Rest Silhouette Matches. Half the shooters contested all three classes; the other three each contested two classes. A cute little dog provided comic relief, and very gusty winds were both blessing and curse for over-baked competitors attempting tiny targets to extreme ranges with airguns in blast furnace shooting conditions. In other words, what great fun!

Three shooters contested Slug class, and as to be expected, a slug-shooter posted high score of the day. Jim Martin turned in an excellent 32/40 with his Midas Tac scoped .22 AGT Vulcan 3, shooting 40 grain H&Ns at 925 FPS. Great shooting, Jim!

All six shooters entered the Eighty Foot Pound (maximum) pellet class. I barely managed to prevent Jim Martin’s total dominance of the day by edging by him by one point; posting a 27/40 with my Athlon scoped .22 Red Wolf HP shooting 24.4 grain JSB Redesigns about 970 FPS. Jim’s second-place 26/42 was shot with a Sightron-scoped .30 Daystate. He used 44.5 grain pellets at 860 FPS. Good shooting, Jim.

Jim Clarke finished third in Eighty Foot Pound Class with a 24/40. Jim shot 25.38 RM pellets at 980 FPS through his 10-50X Hawke Optics scoped .22 Red Wolf. Good shooting, Jim.

Five contested the Thirty-Five Foot Pound Class. As alluded to earlier, Jim Martin also captured that win. In pretty dominant manner. Jim kicked our b… correction- Jim “prevailed” with his Athlon scoped .22 FX Maverick, shooting 18 grain pellets 905 FPS. His 26/40 was well clear of the rest of us… correction- “the field”. Great shooting, Jim!

I shot 22/40 for second place with my Brocock Bantam Sniper HR, shooting 18.13 JSBs 925 FPS. The Bantam currently wears a vintage 6-18X Bushnell Legend scope, but that could change at any given moment.

Brian Stafford posted a 19/40 score for third with a .22 Taipan Mutant, shooting 15.89 grain JSBs 860 FPS. He used a Nightforce NX8 scope. Good shooting, Brian.

The next TEXtreme competition will be an Extreme Field Target match rifle, September 3. That match will award at least $800 in Airguns Of Arizona gift certificates to the top shooters. Hope to see y’all then.

Ron Robinson (Match Director)
