Athlon Rangecraft Velocity Pro Radar Chronograph

I am writing this evening to share my thoughts and opinion on the Athlon Rangecraft Chronograph. I fell in love with mine right from the very first time I used it and was super excited to review it, but thought I would wait and use it for a couple months to see if any problems might show up. Well I have been using mine now for about three months and am very pleased to say that my unit has worked flawlessly for me from the first time I used it until now.

I have owned several Caldwell and Pro Chrono chrongraphs in the past with the "sun shields" and grew to hate them due to their annoying "error" codes that constantly pop up, or they just don't read a shot at all. Eventually I got one of the Fx radar chronographs that hangs on the end of my barrel, but it has to be connected to my phone and had an annoying habit of dropping the bluetooth connection, and would get wonky if in the hot sun too long on. Also every one of these chrono's I previosly owned were total battery hogs!

This new Athlon chrongraph is so easy to use! I just set in on my folding table and point it at the target and shoot my air rifles, and it picks up every shot without ever giving me any dreaded error messages or missed picking up a shot! I can set it on the front of the table by the muzzle or set it all the way back by my trigger hand and it still picks up every shot perfectly...so it doesn't matter where I set it as long as it's pointed at the target it picks up the shot. Also I used it all summer in the HOT FLORIDA SUN on days that were 97 degrees, and yet it kept working flawlessly every time! It also has it's own rechargeable battery that lasts a long, long, long time...so I was able to forget about contantly replacing batteries and hoping I remembered to bring spares!

The menu is so easy to navigate that a child could use it...from the Home screen just scroll down to New Session & press OK, the select Rifle, Pistol, Archery, or AirGun & press OK, then enter the Weight of your Projectile & press OK, and now you are ready to use the screen. You may download the ballistic application to your smart phone to access all of those wonderful features, but I just use it from the basic screen and write down the velocity and Kinetic Energy of my slugs or pellets on a simple tablet for comparisons.

In the past I have reviewed quite a few things here on AGN and to my chagrin those reviews were rather long winded and overly detailed...so I am making this one short and to the point, which is that I give this new Rangecraft Chronograph my highest recommendation of Five Stars! This thing just works! I believe it's the best chrono on the market today and has the best price of them all. So forget the rest and get the best... you will be thrilled with the performance and delighted with the price!

All the best, Chuck

It definitely makes chronographing less tedious and more consistent. I’m just curious as to how accurate the readings are in terms of calibration.

I do love mine, but the battery only lasts 4-5 hours. Be prepared to have a charger with you.
The other minor issues are that it is sensitive enough to pick up shots from a shooter on the next bench and that it stops reading if you exceed 99 shots. You have to start a new string. Not a big deal, but if you like to have it reading as you shoot for a long session, you will have to reset it occasionally.

In my comparisons against my Pro Chrono and FX Pocket Radar the readings on my Athlon Chrono were always within a couple feet per second of the others. You could put a dozen chrono's side by side and the readings would all be fairly close due to them being calibrated by the same equipment before they leave the factory...and it doesn't matter if your projectile is going a few feet faster or slower than what a chrono says anyway. What matters is consistent reliable performance without constant error messages or missed not reading at all. You can have an extreme spread of 40-50 ft/s and still produce a one inch group at a hundred yards...but one of the best benefits of knowing your approximate true velocity allows you to use a ballistic program to tell you how much to hold over on shots past your rifle's zeroed yardage.

@chuckster636 I simply said I was curious in terms of calibrated accuracy. I’m not sure sure where all of this is coming from. My targets tell me where to hold. I don’t rely on ballistic software. There is a lot I can say, but it’s mostly for my own use so it’s not worth discussing further.

I recently got the Athlon chrony also, only used once for a few hours last time out at the range. Picked up every shot and had zero problems. This is my third chronograph and the best one I’ve used, imo (started with the Pro Chrono, then FX) although it cost more than the first two combined, well worth it for the size and quality. 👍🏼
