Athlon Midas Tac 6-24x50 vs. Aztec Emerald ffp 5.5-25x50

I have both and Aztec Emerald FFP w/illumination and a Helos BTR. I posted a humble comparison between the two. I love the reticle in the Aztec, very useable and uncluttered for shooting at typical sub 100 yards airgun ranges. Love the reticle on the Helos also, the glass through both is comparable to my older eyes. The Athlon is a more robust scope. I dial at will with the Helos. I use mostly holdovers with the Aztec. If I was choosing between the two you presented... I would pick the Midas Tac. I have become an Athlon fanboy.

The Midas Tac is in a league above the Aztecs. The extra $50 will be well worth it!

Ditto. Not even close...

+1 buy the Athlon.

The Aztec reticle is too thin to see in low light, plus it's not illuminated. Also there is an issue with the splines on the turret which affects setting to zero accurately.

I've been flip flopping on FFP scopes. A couple of years ago, I had nothing but SFP scopes. Then about two years ago, I started getting nothing but FFP scopes, but shortly thereafter I started "clicking" or dialing" for my yardages. If that is your primary method of adjusting your scope for range, the FFP has no advantage over SFP, and in fact can be a disadvantage since at lower mag the reticle can be very small. I recently bought a scope for my new Delta Wolf (whenever that will be?) and I bought the Athlon Midas BTR 4.5-27x50 Mil/Mil SFP Gen2 scope. Glass is equivalent to the Midas TAC, turrets are just as good if not better, and it has an IR reticle. I've been using the ScopeWerks turrets almost exclusively dialing these days, and the Midas BTR was a better choice for me than the Midas TAC (I have two Midas TAC scopes). I have one Athlon Ares BTR and I see no difference in clarity or contrast between those and the Midas BTR. In fact, it appears to me that the Midas BTR is an SFP version of the Ares BTR FFP.

Centercut,

Does the Athlon Midas BTR's 30Yd parallax cause you any issues on short range shooting?

I’ve been back and forth as well on the FFP and SFP stuff. Some of the FFP scopes are useless on low power . What it comes down to I believe is do you have a good rangefinder. If so I believe a person is better off using a SFP scope and clicking rather the holding over. Some times I find the reticles distracting The christmas tree reticles particularity don’t work for me.

No, I was concerned about that at first also. I've used it for 25M BR on 27X and it focuses fine at that range. If you lower the magnification for closer shots than 25M, like say 8X, it'll focus down in the 15 to 16 yard range. I've never had a problem with it at shorter ranges, since I usually am at a lower mag for short shots.

10 yard minimum focus and illuminated reticle. I compared it side by side with my $599 JAPAN BUSHNELL TAC 4.5-30x50 (everywhere else sells this scope for $899-$999 with a $1200 retail). Very close in optical clarity. I compared it to more than 30 different scopes ranging from $160 Discovery to everything in between and up to $1200 retail price. You will be shocked if you ever bought one of these and did side by side clarity comparison to scopes costing up to $1200. Only the Hawke Frontiers and EDs give this one a good run that's under $1200 not even the $800-$900 Vortex Vipers justifies the price difference just see for yourselves.

The MIDAS TAC is a excellent ffp scope! I was a little Leary? Not because it was ffp but the price vs. quality? But honestly can say it’s worth every penny “CC called it on this scope“ all three of my other scopes are sfp for target shooting but mounted the Athlon on my RW .177 and love it! It has a really small center dot and is excellent for Target work out to 50yds ( I never shoot below 24x though! )
