Athlon Midas tac 6-24X50 for HFT?

Ah yes the search for the “perfect” scope for HFT(US) continues. I’ve read loads of positive reviews but I’d still like to hear how well the Midas tac is working out from a HFT guy. Which reticle would be the best choice? How about reticle size at 16X? I tried the Helos but the reticle was just a wee bit too coarse for the close 3/8” KZ stuff and it didn’t focus range-find as well as I’d hoped. On the other hand I’ve had scopes with reticles so fine that my 72yo eyes found them useless in dark target dark lane situations. Any first hand knowledge or experience appreciated. Uj

I think the Midas TAC would be a good Hunter Division scope. But I also think the Helos is a good Hunter Division scope. The Helos reticle is just the right thickness relative to the KZ. The Midas is probably the same. I just don't understand when people say that a reticle is too course/thick for field target. I have never found that to be the case (especially in Hunter Division). Here is a picture through an Athlon Helos at 16x. Phone camera was hand held so not steady or well centered:

That is the worst case scenario (3/8" at 19yds). The 3/8" kz spans about 2moa at 19yds. The cross-hair does not obscure any significant portion of the kz. A finer reticle will not help me position the cross-hair any more precisely. So I don't think that a finer reticle would help at all.

What Scott said..

I ran an Argos last year and never felt or saw there was a problem with the reticle. I think you will be fine.
the fuzziness you are experiencing may be do to the ocular (closest to you eye lenses) not being focused correctly. Lots and lots of information and videos on how to adjust correctly but your eye is going to be different from everyone else’s.

what I found works for me is to set the parallax on infinity, the ocular lense turned in all the way and the magnification on 16x. I point the scope at the white wall in my garage. if you wear glasses, wear your glasses. Otherwise your eye will confuse you brain. (And if you haven’t had your eyes checked in a year or two, consider it) Look through the scope at the reticle for only a couple of three, four seconds. Only long enough to see if the reticle is sharp. If not, turn the ring out just a little. Now look away. Close you eyes for a few seconds. Let your vision recover. Repeat. Repeat until you get it like you want it.
good luck and you shouldn’t be disappointed in the Athlon scopes.

I use an Argos BTR 6-24 for Hunter and Freestyle, both holding and dialing.

I dislike Hunter division because I don't like NOT knowing the distance to within a yard or so, so I don't shoot it much, maybe not at all anymore. That being said a friend challenged me to shoot Hunter in 2019 to compete against him (he usually won and still does) but I won my first 2019 match on first try. NEVER any problems with the reticle being too big or to small!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think it's the perfect reticle thickness for general use. I have also won Freestyle division at state the last 4 years using that scope so hopefully that gives others confidence in the Argos BTR line.

The Midas TAC is a much better scope so I would think it'd be at least equally well suited for FT.

The best I've seen for Hunter so far was that same friends Kahles 10-40x56, man that thing ranges well on 16x!!!
