Athlon Ares ETR 3-18x50 APRS6 FFP IR MIL UHD Review

In my review of this beautiful Ares ETR 3-18x50 FFP MIL rifle scope I will touch upon some of its specifications and features, but for a full description and breakdown of all of its wonderful features and specifications you may go to: https://athlonoptics.com/product/ares-etr-3-18x50-aprs6-ffp-ir-mil-uhd/

The retail price of these scopes is only $999.99. These scopes are frequently used by shooters competing in PRS - Precision Rifle Shooting competitions where they are shooting targets that range from 400 yards to 950 yards, and also used of course for intermediate range hunting. This is a serious scope for serious shooters. So for you guys that want to shoot accurately at intermediate ranges with your Air Rifle or Powder Burner this is the scope for you.

Some of the wonderful features includes a Precision Erector System with stainless steel internal components that produce very sharp, loud, tactile clicks that you can readily hear and feel so there is no mistaking how many clicks you put on your elevation or windage turrets. And as an added bonus the windage turret has a pull up / push down Locking Turret Cap. The elevation turret also has a dedicated Zero Stop that is very simple to set up.

This scope uses an Etched Glass Reticle with four options and a 34mm main tube. The reticle is in the First Focal Plane which means that the hashmarks on the reticle are valid at all power settings. It has a 50mm objective lens and uses Extra Low Dispersion Glass and true Multi-Coated Lenses to produce the sharpest image possible. You will truly appreciate the way these lens coatings cut through the mirage effect so your target is in clear relief as opposed to the guy next to you that's looking at a target that's dancing in the mirage.

This scope features MIL/MIL or MOA/MOA turret/reticle combinations to prevent any confusion when calculating your holdovers. It has a total elevation & windage adjustment of 32 MILS with 10 MILS per turret rotation; or a total elevation & windage adjustment of 110 MOA with 25 MOA per turret rotation. It features a side focus parallax adjustment from 10 yards to infinity – so it is suitable for shooting at targets as close as 10 yards.

The tube is purged with Argon Gas that is far superior to Nitrogen gas purged scopes because it gives you much better water proofing and most importantly the very best thermal stability possible – so that when you take your rifle out of your nice toasty warm pickup truck on a bitter cold morning your scope will never ever fog up on you! Or conversely if you take your rifle out of your ice cold air conditioned pickup truck on a sweltering ungodly hot day your scope will not fog up on you!

In conclusion, let me say that I don't think there is any other 3-18x50 scope with a 34mm tube that can come close to this one from Athlon for the low price of $999.99. When you hold this scope in your hands and look through it you get the same feeling as when you first sit in an expensive luxury car…its that feeling of being in the presence of a super powerful luxurious precision machine. You will immediately sense that you are holding something very special indeed!

The sight picture through this scope is nothing short of spectacular and has to be seen to be believed. This Ares ETR 3-18x50 has my highest personal recommendation, so before you spend your hard earned money on any other intermediate range medium powered scope take a good look at this one.

All the best, Chuck Peffley

Great review CHUCK thanks-!

CHUCK is the first one that lit the fuse to push Athlon when they first started-!!!

Not to take away from all Chucks accomplishments with Athlon or anything else he's started or helped with because he's obviously a visionary. Chuck definitely was the first to get Athlon started here at AGN. We talked on the phone yesterday for an hour, Chucks a neat person and we have a lot in common!

But the truth is that I got immediately BANNED from the Yellow forum when ATHLON first came out FOR creating a post simply stating that I had my new Talos BTR 4-14x44 and how COOL it was. I literally had the first one in the nation which was a preproduction model and BTW I helped design the reticle in it which was the FIRST ALL .2 mil reticle ever to be offered in a scope of this price range. I THINK the reason I got CANCELLED was that the now defunct AEON scopes had just started making a footing and were sponsors of that forum back then. The political crap on forums is such total BS it's absolutely Bizarre. The Mods over there wouldn't even return my emails.

BTW I also got banned from longrangehunting forum at the same time for the same thing. I don't pick fights nor am a caustic personality, seriously, it's nothing more than forum politics??!!

I also was the first person to introduce Robert at AOA to Kevin the owner of Athlon.

As to the ETR 3-18x50, yeah that thing will definitely RULE it's roost! Got my eye on it....

I called Athlon, and double checked at Cameraland, the news was that this particular scope is not available for sale to the public quite yet. Joel at Cameraland said they are hoping for early April. Chuck is of course an industry insider like myself which is why I had the Helos 2-12x42 a month ago and he has this ETR now, both for review, even though we own these scopes by paying for them ourselves and fully intend to enjoy them.

As it turns out Steve and I both have been badgering Athlon to come out with certain specific reticles and improvements over the last few years...with the understanding that there is always room for a little improvement and innovation. According to Steve he has even helped design several of the reticles in the scopes that are new for 2021...two of my personnel favorites are the APRS6 in FFP and the AHMR2 in the new Helos 2-12x42 FFP as shown below.

I am hoping Athlon will put this AHMR2 reticle in some of their higher end scopes in the future such as the Midas TAC and the Ares BTR line of scopes in both FFP and SFP. I especially like this AHMR2 because I never need to "hold under" with my rifles because I zero my scopes at whatever range is necessary so that I will only ever have to "hold over" but never have to "hold under". So by eliminating the top vertical leg of the reticle it opens up the sight picture dramatically.

I purchased one of the Helos 2-12x42 FFP scopes with this AHMR2 reticle to check out for myself because I love shooting "standing offhand" the most and love this "point & shoot" or "acquire & fire" type of reticle - and this one has the added features of holdovers with holdoff dots down to 8 mils, and also has a "ranging reticle" down below for ranging a white tail buck from 200-600 yards for example. You won't scoff at "only 12X" when you stop and remember that Marine Corp Snipers use fixed 10X scopes for shots out to 600 yards easy peasy!

And Steve whether or not anyone else appreciates all your efforts at bringing these reticles and other improvements to these Athlon Scopes let me say here that I for dang sure do! Now go out today and have some shooting FUN you guys!!! 😁

Much love to all, Chuck

Cute dog Leon! And yes I too am very excited by the new Helos 2-12x42 & also my new Helos 6-24x56...I am just as excited about Athlon Scopes today as I was five or six years ago when I got my very first one, which was an Argos 6-24x56 if I remember correctly. They don't throw in sunshades or sidewheels or lens covers and they don't come in a fancy box which allows them to keep the prices down. Rather they put that money into the glass and lens coatings instead, and isn't the quality of the glass and lens coatings the most important thing of all? I assure you it is for me! Quite simply it is a quality product for a fair price! Period!

Best regards, Chuck

You lucky dog!!! I'm waiting on that exact scope from Doug at Cameraland. I believe I'm first on the pre-order list. Been a little over a month wait so far. Doug said there impatiently waiting the shipment notification this week from Athlon still but should be soon. I'm a big Athlon fan as well and love my Midas Tac 4-16x44. The Ares will be taking it's place on my EVOL. And I for one love the new reticle. I looked at a number of reticles of all kinds of scopes I was looking at and nothing beat the APRS6 for my preference.

Ah ha ha ha! Man I'm laughing out loud cause I just mounted my brand new Helos 6-24x56 IR MIL with the APRS6 Reticle last night! 😂 I was going to go shooting today and zero it for 30 yards but my old woman asked me to stay home and spend the day with her...😳😅 So I am chomping at the bit to go sight it in the morning! And by the way I am definitely keeping both of my new Helos scopes...they are Keepers for sure! Here is a photo of what it looks like on Helga...and a photo of the coconut tree by my front porch - lots more test material for these most excellent .30 FX Hybrid Slugs I got! 😆

Yea I was also curious about the fact that none of the sunshades are interchangeable...each sunshade is proprietary to the specific scope it was made for...I guess you just have to make sure you order the right shade for your scope.

And by the way Odoyle, how many times did you want to emphasis your point? You typed it in all capital letters, and then made them bold, and then underlined? Boy you sure no how to get your point across! 😆😂
