PA is currently offering a limited edition of the Ataman Ultra Compact and they sent me one to replace the regular version which I sent back. I haven't had a chance to do much testing yet but so far I am having a much better experience.

So how does the limited edition differ from the regular version to make it worth an extra $100? I put it through a crony yesterday and it sent JSB 15's out at 906 fps instead of 845-850 fps for the two I returned. But... there is more:

First, the barrel is longer. the 8" pistol barrel has been replaced with one that is 12-13". I can't measure exactly because it is inside a shroud tube that is glued in place but I can see that it goes nearly all the way to the end. This is a good thing as I intended to add a longer barrel anyway. The longer barrel is the source of the extra power. It is not just a stronger spring so there should be no sacrifice in shot count.

This also means that the limited edition has no baffles at all. It is loud. Without an LDC, you need hearing protection. I thought this would make me angry but it didn't. You see the baffles in the regular version were largely ineffective and poorly made. You could not make a pellet leave the gun without hitting the end cap. But fear not. I was able to purchase a shroud extension from WildWest for $80.
I also added a homemade carbon fiber tube with a deliberate air gap and it is now it managable. It is not as quiet as my Mutant with just the factory shroud but it is not far off my Cricket 25. The Wild West shroud is very narrow. It could do with using a tube that is double the diameter but for $80 it's fine. I can now use it in my backyard.

The downside is that it is no longer a super short pistol carbon. With the stock open it is a little over 40" from recoil pad to the end of the shroud extension and 42" with the length of pull adjusted to my preferred position. It is a little less than 29" with the stock folded.

The regular version was around 5lb 12oz. Without weighing yet, the special edition feels a few ounces more but still light compared to most.

There is more. I don't know if this is by accident or design but the wood on this special edition is noticeably nicer than the last two I had. The color and grain are more attractive and the finish is better. The shroud tube seems to run parallel to the barrel while it visibly did not on the last two.

Check out the pic above. It looks good right?

There are no chunks of wood missing from the stock which is also a batter start and there is less visible wood filler. It's still not a great stock but it's a slight improvement. It is not nicely figured or anything like that and it is still poorly cut with one side wider than the other but at least I have to look for the issues now. I got two splinters just from picking up the last one...

Anyway... I am going to go ahead and review this one. I don't know this for sure yet but I think I might end up liking this gun. It's quieter, light and looks good, plus, with the longer barrel and no Ataman shroud, it has a good chance of being accurate. We'll see.

I haven't had a chance to do a full string yet because I need to get my tanks filled but 10 shots with JSB 15's starting at 205 bar looked like this:

906, 903, 891, 901, 906, 906, 903, 887, 903, 889.

Last time I checked, PA had 5 or 6 of these left but the synthetic versions were available in white and green stocks which is the other part of the limited edition differences. The walnut version I have I believe has slightly upgraded wood btw.

Glad you got your just desserts - finally.
The stock on mine is darker, but has good character and symmetry. I went opposite, and de-tuned via the hammer spring from 28 fpe to 25. The report, kick, and shot count all improved noticably. When an Ernest vid comes out showing how to get at the reg, I would like to take it down a little more to see if it only "puffs". I have enough 30+ .22 guns, and I love the smooth side lever action.
The only grip I have is after a good barrel cleaning, The breach o-ring needs to be seasoned or it will jam up JSB pellets. When jammed, tap on the magazine while putting small pressure on the side
lever. Barracudas do not jam, they are more pointed, have a
film on them, and the inside centers the forces of the pellet probe wilth it's cone shape. After a mag or two of cudas, you can shoot the JSB. Unique situaation and very frustrating.

The standard edition stocks are darker (or at least the two I had were). The special edition stocks look lighter even in the photos so I am guessing it is a different grade of wood.

This new one seems to have slightly better tuning but it's still noticeably quieter while on the reg even with the WildWest shroud extension. I think that lowering the reg setting would make it an all round better gun. This one drops off the reg at 140 bar. I'm no expert (or anything close) but that seems high for a 28fpe gun. It doesn't drop velocity until you get to 110 bar so it may as well still be on the reg for more shots.

I'm considering removing the shroud tube on mine. As it doesn't have any baffles it's only cosmetic anyway but because it has a long barrel, I can use the threads to attach a more effective LDC as it will easily clear the air tube. The short barrel on the standard one ends half way down the air tube so there isn't enough room to fit the mutant shroud or a Huggett etc. unlike the end cap on the shroud tubes, the barrel has 1/2" UNF threads so lots of LDCs will fit.

I did a brief test and mine does not like H&N Barracudas at all. It's annoying as I like to hunt with those. I hope it's not super pellet fussy. I can't live with air guns that can only fire JSBs.

"ddransoml"@zebra...there were asymmetrical cuts in the portion of the stock that housed the air tube on your previous Compact...have those issues been addressed?
That is a good look piece.
I don't think the Russians care much about silence in their air guns...b@!!$ out power seems their tradition.
No, the stock is still poorly cut with one side wider than the other. They are all like that. The only way to correct it would be for Ataman to remake the stocks for every one they shipped (after correcting whatever fault caused the issue).

The areas where this one is better than the last are: the quality of the wood, it has less visible wood filler (although there is still some), there are no visible splinters hanging off it and I can't see any chunks of wood bitten out like the last one.

To be honest, a lot of wood stocks on air rifles are poorly cut with uneven thickness from one side to the other. The reason why it's particularly problematic for this gun is that it was already designed with very thin side walls for the stock and 90 degree cuts for the inletting. With the cut being uneven, the right side is paper thin right next to the 90 degree cut which makes it the most delicate stock on earth. You could snap the right side wall off with your little finger and very little effort.

The last one I sent back arrived already cracked at the point of weakness. I think if Ataman wants to start repairing it's rep in America, it should fedex out replacement stocks to everyone who bought the walnut versions before there is too many in circulation to be viable.

This is a pic of the stock for the last one I sent back:

Where the crack is happens to be the part where the wood is noticeably thinner than the other side.

The last pic above shows it with the camera flash so you can see where crack is creeping down the side of the stock. I am lucky that it arrived like that because if it happened at a later date, there is nowhere to buy a replacement stock. You can also see the wood filler on the grip in that last photo. Yuck....

I have to say though that Paul from PA marketing has been incredibly professional and diligent in dealing with it. He was very much stuck in the middle of a problem he didn't create and he never directed blame elsewhere or tried to avoid fixing it. He called me to make it right before I called him. He left a very good impression with me.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy any air rifle from PA. I would have no worries about being left with a lemon as they have always gone out of their way to fix any issues for me in a way that minimized the hassle.

Aside from the issues with the stock and shroud, these Ultra compacts have a lot of potential. I think it's important to stress that so someone looking for a lightweight hunting carbine doesn't miss out on something that might fit them well.

I can't think of many other air rifles that are as light, compact and adjustable. You'll see when I have finished writing up the review that it has a number of redeeming features. Remember that my much loved Mutant also has a stock that is an abomination but I live with it because the rest is so good.
