At What Impact Velocities Are HP Slugs Still Expanding?

For those of us who don’t have the latest power-plus-plaything-part shooting slugs will happen in the lower velocities.

So, I wonder if the hollow points of the slugs will still expand in quarry at lower impact velocities...? (700fps, 600fps in .22cal)

Do you have any evidence that they do (or don't)?

At what (estimated?) impact velocities do you see expansion in quarry?

Seems like this calls for a test series....! 😎

I will be following this. Buddy of mine likes both fx hybrid and HN grizzly and he has fair groups but the velocities were low 692 was his top FPS

my thought and what I was telling him is your shooting 75 feet in a suburban backyard once you stretch the legs I’m worried you won’t be as happy.

we’re going to try and pickup up some clay from the craft store the wives shop at and could post results.

following this one Thanks!

Interesting question! There's a lot of factors at play here (size of the point, cavity size, caliber, etc.). Most people have been tuning their guns to shoot slugs at 950 FPS+ and have been getting accurate results but I haven't seen much about shooting slugs at slower speeds. This might help see what the minimum power needed for using slugs to their full benefit is (at least for expansion/hunting).

Here is a video on the FX Hybrids which I believe would be the same as the Varmint Knockers and should have about the best expansion of the slugs. Tested in the lower 800fps and lower 900fps

Shooter 1721 did an FX Hybrid slug test at 100, 200,300 yards

Four slugs tested at higher speeds and 50-56fpe

Accuracy wise I have shot the NSA 33.5 hp and 34gr Varmint Knockers moa at 100 yards at 740fps and several other velocities to 960fps. The 36.2 NSA at 950-980fps moa at 100 yards and my go to for 200 yard shooting
