Arizona Hunting

I arrived in Tucson Monday for my work trip and I got my hunting license. I went to the Coronado National Forest after work today to try and find some critters. I was able to murder multiple cow pies, but that's all. I did spook up a rabbit, but he darted into thick cover and I didn't see him again. I found a can and was tagging it every shot at 100 yards with my Impact. Every shot impresses me more than the previous with this rifle. I have the next two days off, so I'm headed to AoA in the morning to check it out and possibly get some advise on where to hunt collared doves. With some luck, I can find a good hunting spot and make a video outside of my backyard.

Good for you, hope you connect with some game. The bunnies in AZ are actually bigger than the coastal brush rabbits we have here in California, I've wished for my airgun a time or two on vacation out there. Those collared doves cook up nicely if you get a few. I like to filet the breast, rub with olive oil, salt and pepper and cook on a very slow fire!

There's a LOT of state land in Arizona. If you read the hunting regs closely, a hunting license counts as authorization for purposes of the "authorized use only" signs that surround state land. The tricky part is cross-referencing land ownership with game regions and specific restrictions in each region, which are mostly described in text form in the regs.

I drove up to AoA this morning and then went to two dairy farms near Gilbert. Both owners said I couldn't shoot at their farm. I took 79 back down to Tucson and passed through the cactus forest. I though to myself this would be an awesome place to walk around with my Impact. Even if I didn't see anything, it's beautiful and I'd get some much needed excercise. I pulled in a dirt road and there was a sign posted saying you needed a permit to enter, so I didn't enter. Saturday is my last day off, so I'll try and figure something out. The Coronado National Forest isn't producing like I had hoped. Seen two bunnies on the run and couldn't track them down.

I JOINED THE 100+ CLUB!!!!!!!!! Got a bunny today at 120. Okay, it was 120 inches. I shot the son of a b$%*# at 10 feet. I didn't even look down my scope. I one handed the Impact gangster style and planted one in the back of his head. I'm not proud, but I got one. I left my backpack in my car, so I set the thing under a bush so I could walk 10 more minutes and when I came back to retrieve him, he was gone. Cayote prints all around. Didn't see him though.

I have to say I take most of my bunnies at 20 yards or less, a lot at less than 10. I walk slowly through heavy brush as quietly as I can and try to spot one before he spooks, than thread a pellet through the brush for a headshot. Mornings and evenings are usually best. Haven't had coyotes grab any but have had crows peck the eyes if I leave one where they can see it!
