Results April 2 TEXtreme Bench-Rest Match Results

Our April 2 TEXtreme Bench-Rest Silhouette match being the first to allow slugs, apparently the winds decided it an opportune time to not just come out to play, but go berserk! The schizophrenic winds demonstrated, in no uncertain terms, just how superior slugs are to pellets in windy conditions to 100 yards. Think football versus badminton shuttlecock.

Aside from constantly shifting winds, ten shooters and a little dog enjoyed fine sunny and mild weather with a high temperature in the mid-80s.

Jim Martin, owner of Trailers Plus in Weatherford, fierce competitor, and gentleman of the highest order graciously donated two crispy-new $100 bills to supplement our usual hat-pin awards. MANY THANKS JIM! I decided one $100 bill would go to the winner of the 35 Foot Pound class, the other to the winner of the 80 Foot Pound class that included pellet and slug shooters. Gracious and gentleman though he be, Jim made it clear he expected the two $100 bills to go back to Weatherford with him. Although the twin bills stayed together, rather than going back northwest, they went southeast.

Derrick Wall captured the 35 FP class win with an excellent-for conditions 25/40, shooting his .22 AAA Evol Mini topped with a Bushnell Nitro scope and launching 18.13 grain JSBs 895 FPS. He also took the 80 FP class win with a fine 32/40 score using a beautifully (walnut) stocked .22 AGT Vulcan 3. Derrick used an Athlon Helos scope; the Vulcan 3 zinging 40 grain Zan slugs 940 FPS. Great shooting Derrick! And “rewarding”.

Jim came close to taking one of his… correction, Derrick’s hundred dollar bills back to Weatherford. Jim’s 31/40 was good enough for second place in the 80 FP class, and on the day. Jim shot Zan slugs through his .25 Daystate Red Wolf topped with a Sightron scope. Good shooting, Jim!

Chuck Misenheimer also posted a 31/40 with his .25 Red Wolf topped with an Athlon Ares scope, but Jim’s higher turkey count relegated Chuck to third place. Chuck shot 34.49 grain Knock Out slugs at 906 FPS.

Chuck shot the highest pellet score of the day by posting a 24/40 with his Athlon Cronus scoped .22 Daystate Safari, shooting 25.39 JSB Redesigns 972 FPS. Good shooting, Chuck.

The next highest pellet scores were Ron Robinson’s two 23/40s. One was shot with a .30 FX Bobcat shooting 44.75 JSBs 870 FPS; the other 23/40 posted with my .22 Brocock Sniper HR shooting 18.13 FX pellets 930 FPS (in the 35 FP class).

That slugs not only posted the top three scores on the day, but the best pellet score was seven points behind reinforces aforementioned superiority of slugs in brutal wind conditions. Suffice to say...

Point taken.

Thanks for sharing Ron.

Derricks really got those 40gr ZANs smoking, @ 940 he's just a shade under 80fpe! Lotsa oomph right there. The power output some of the newer stuff is capable of is really getting up there. Knocking on the door of subsonic .22 LR rimfire and blew right past .22 Short fpe.

I agree, no sense in bringing a 🔪 to that gun fight. Even @ 970, those 25.4grain pellets (around 53fpe) are 25.5fpe less than the 40gr ZANs and what, less than half the BC?

Thank you for the Match report Ron. It’s always a great time competing in any of your matches. Thank you to Jim Martin for putting up the prize money and getting Ron to release his grip on it 🤣

The .22 Vulcan 3 does real well with the 40gr Zans. It's capable of a bit more power but I have her dialed back for this 80 FPE limit. I’m looking to try Varmint Knockers, H&N & Javelins 40gr as well. Got the Varmint Knockers from Dale the other day but the other two are hard to come by!

Most proud of the .22 Evol Mini. The little guy braved the harsh conditions and surprised me, fighting to the top!! What a dynamite compact package 🔥 🧨.......

CORRECTION- Derrick shot the highest pellet score of the match with his 25/40 shot with the .22 Evol Mini; not Chuck. MY BAD!

The .22 Mini Evol and I were high pellet score.
Chuck was high 80 FPE pellet class.
Ron you are high most of the time 🤣

Maybe put the bong away for match reports 💨

lol put the bong away
