Anyone upgraded to the new Daystate magazines? Or got a new rifle with one?

I bought a new style mag for my Red Wolf, didn't know there was a new style index pin. It works fine, can't really tell any difference in accuracy. My Red Wolf shoots better using the single shot tray than with either style Daystate magazine, or the CARM, of which I have two. It shoots well enough with any on them for general use or short range hunting, but I always use the tray for targets. Regarding a "new style" pin, I don't see that it should make any difference.It's the metal arm/lever in the old style magazine that contacts the probe, and has been the topic of so much discussion and criticism. So, unless the index pin is broken, why replace it?

I have been under the impression that the new magazines did not have the indexing pawl in the magazine,.. therefore,... the indexing pin in the action is doing nothing. Also,.. the magazine had clearance for the indexing pin to rise up. I only have the old style.

Unless I have it ALL wrong?

I was thinking the same thing, which was why I posted this topic. :)

I'm looking at both of them right now, and it sure seems that you are correct. There is a recess in the new mag that should allow the pin to rise with no contact or damage to the magazine. I'm going to call AOA and hear what they say.

Just spoke with AOA, and was told the new pin is needed to avoid mag damage. I'm going to do some measuring tonight, and closely examine the new mag, which I've used for maybe 100 shots. I received the mag a few weeks ago, and it was on backorder since last fall. I wonder if a change in design was made during that period of time? I have the new pin on the way, but not sure I'm going to use it. The new pin is NOT compatible with the old style mag, as it will not advance the index lever....FUBAR! If that is the case, I think some of the design folks must have had a few extra pints at the local pub.

I'm new to this and I know a lot has been reviewed already. Just got Red Wolf and like the magazine counter (10 for me) AND the anti double load. So I avoided the latest version of the magazines. Invested in 6 magazines (10 shots, .177) and the probe on my RW has a gash in it! Cant they just address all of this while while retaining the features of the gun. My RW was bought new only 1 month ago.



I guess I could have ordered the newer magazines and just loaded 10 pellets in there, but I would not have the anti double load feature.



Just venting and will shut up now..

I just measured the distance from the bottom of the old mag, to the depressed indexing arm, it's about .090". The depth of the cutout on the new mag is about .110". I looked closely under good light at the new mag, rotating the pellet cylinder all around, and can see no mark at all from the pin. Now, that's not totally conclusive, because I don't know the maximum extension of the unrestricted pin. I'll take it apart sometime and measure, but I'm not worried about damage to the mag at this point.

I received a response from AOA regarding the index pin issue with the new style magazine. I was told the risk is pin breakage, not magazine damage. Since there is no resistance with the new mag, as there is no advance lever, the base of the pin strikes the cover plate when extended. I understand this as a potential issue, but it seems the same risk would be present with the single shot tray. I have a vague memory of some previous issues with pin breakage, and maybe that was the reason.

In case anyone is following this new magazine issue, I received a response from Daystate. They claim the new mag is fully compatible with the actuator pin in the rifle. If so, the obvious question then, why make a replacement plug/pin that will not index the old style magazine? I'm tired of the issue, and will probably do nothing unless something breaks.

Probably because the unrestricted pin tends to break more quickly? That said when mine broke while I was using primarily the SST I didn't see any performance issue or reason to care apart from being unable to use the original mag.

When I replaced it (no CARM mags at that point), on inspection the pin does appear to act as a guide for itself when intact. I suppose if it binds in some way when broken you might end up with an irritating puff of air from the pinhole on each shot, or something like that.

I agree. If it breaks, it's of no consequence to me, as I will be using only the SST, new mag, or CARM mags anyway.
