Tuning Anyone shot an M3 MOA with 18gr pellets? ...having trouble...

Hi, New M3 owner...wondering if the M3 is capable of a 1 inch group at 100 yards with FX 18.1gr pellets. I adjusted it to the factory tune from FX. It was at 933 FPS. I did my Micro barrel roller a few clicks till I got to 888 FPS (885-890). I am doing about inch and a half - 2 inch groups at 75 yards at best. 

What more could I do to tune it? Nothing? 

I got the gun used so it could be screwed up or something. At 890 FPS: Bad groups past 60 yards and it shoots flyers about every 20 rounds. 

FX Impacts shoot flyers? Is there obviosly something wrong with my gun? 

I can get it worked on for free. I just need to know if there is something I'm missing here.

I would get below 900 and turn the 2nd reg up to at least 100 bar, low pressure and long valve dwell times seem to really be hurting accuracy? leave your first reg where it’s at, and I hope your shooting in a tunnel, because outdoors is tuff with that pellet unless it’s perfect! If there is no wind? The thermals will be even worse up and down, best conditions are consistent wind or evening after the sun has gone down or close. Just what I would do? Don’t know your skills, good luck.👍🏻 Oh and clean the barrel, don’t buy all this don’t need too crud, a lot of them need it! They are all not the same.🤔

Also I think there's too big of a difference between the two regulators... I highly recommend you watch the two hours video Steve put together. It's for the Maverick but a lot of good information about tuning the gun with the two regulators...

I'll say you can keep the second regulator at 70 but lower the first to 110. Steve recommend a difference between the two regulators between 25 and 50 bars. So I'll start with the 70/110 and going up from there. It's easier to go up than going down because no need to degas. 

Shoot over the chronny and see the numbers you are getting... I don't think that gun is tuned at all

I shoot the18 g a lot in various rifles, but I'm not a HP or 100 yard shooter. I agree that the 18 g pellet is unlikely to be a consistently good 100 yard performer. 

Regarding flyers, the FX barrel assembly that utilizes so many parts, IMO, is going to be relatively more likely to have flyers than a robust, solid barrel. That said, the evidence is clear than some folks achieve great results with it. In my experience, if all else is well with shooter, rifle, and ammo, accuracy issues lie with the barrel. Clean it well, and properly. If accuracy doesn't respond, replace it. I discovered years ago in BR shooting, life's too short to live with a bad barrel. And you can't make a bad barrel shoot. The consistency of these FX liners may be perfect, and I may be totally wrong (just ask my wife). I can only report my experience. Good luck.

Did you do all the tedious stuff with the pellets? Wash, Lube (optional), weigh to something like a 10th of a grain, and do the roll test? I find JSB pellets vary in weight up to 5%, which effects pellet speed, which effects accuracy? Also windless days help. 

Before I did all the tedious stuff, best I could do was about 2 MOA. Since then I've had several near MOA groups, with me being the final variable. Still haven't figured out how to remove me as a variable.

Also, on the gun tune - do you notice a speed difference when you move the power wheel from mas to 5 or from 5 to 4? If not, there's still tuning to do. I find when there's no difference on the power wheel, I'm pushing the gun too hard in one or another adjustment. It's a balancing act!

I can't remember where I read it (maybe I didn't, and maybe I just heard it in Steve's video/s)....about the 2 reg pressures should be set closer to each other (20 to 50 bar)....as others have already mentioned.

Consistent MOA at 100 yards will be very hard, if not impossible with the JSB Exact Jumbo 18s. Too many variables at that distance... Good luck.

What pellet/weight would you guys consider a consistent/better performer than the 18.13 grain at 100 yards (in .22 caliber)?

My M3 does ok, but not great with the 18gr pellets at 925fps, probably because I'm running a superior heavy liner as I normally shoot slugs and the twist rate is way too fast for the 18s. They're fine out to 50-60y but not so great past that. Still, the 18s are perfect for closer range lower power target shooting and critters in the backyard. Have not tried them with the regular superior liner, but I would guess they would shoot far better than with the superior heavy liner.

The 18s can shoot great at longer ranges though with the right combo, a friend's Daystate Air Ranger has no issues making small groups at 100-110Y with the 18.1gr pellets provided the wind is calm.

The 25.4gr redesigned pellets on the other hand make tiny groups all the way out to 100y even with the superior heavy liner. They also do much better in the wind than the 18s-- not as good as slugs obviously, but OK for pellets.

Thanks guys! That shed ALOT of light on the subject. I didn't get to shoot my M3 that much...but now when I do have the time and pellets to "get into it" I will know exactly what to do...basicly not expect much for distance with 18gr...save the 100 yard shots for the 25.4gr pellets (and tune). I will watch Steve's video...but also, reducing the difference between the reg's to 50-30 sounds like a great idea. I will do all the stuff suggested here. I'll clean the barrel again too. 

It may be a week or more, but I'll report back when I'm on track. Thank you! 

any more advice will be appreciated. -Nate

yeah 18 gr at 100 is almost impossible 60 to 70 can be done but that light pellet is just not enough weight in my book, iv shot 60 and did really well with impact crown 380 mm and other high end guns keep us posted maybe in a no wind situation it can and has been done plus the pellets that have been coming in are poopy so size them i guess . not for me shoot from the tin if i gotta sort and weight them i not having fun anymore
