Anyone interested in doing a Zoom?

I'm pretty new around here, and just thought it would be cool to see some faces.

Having an actual conversation would be a great way for some of us to learn a lot, and get to know one another a bit.

I’m down for that. Little busy with the end of the semester however, if scheduling works out for sure man. I have a WebEx account and meet regularly with teammates and classmates, virtual meetings are fun. Even if there aren’t five it’d be nice to hang out and shoot the breeze about shooting. It's largely a video-chat feature, for groups of people. Gets used by companies that have remote workers, government offices, academics, universities, etc. 

There's a bunch of other services similar to it, like Skype, MS Teams, and a few others I can't remember.

There's also Signal, which is an encrypted end-to-end user app. Zoom isn't encrypted.

Some things to consider when you have a bunch of people on a call like this. 

Moderator

He should control the flow of the call. 

Key topic(s) announced prior to the call

This will help with "dead air" and attract people that have a specific interest in the chat. 

Raise your hand to speak.

Mute everyone at the opening. Man, if there is one thing people hate about Zoom calls is a free for all where people are talking over each other. 

Camera on optional of course. 

The above are a few of the things to consider. I myself, have moderated Microsoft Teams calls for the company I work for. I can tell you from (a lot of) experience, having a bunch of people trying to talk all at the same time creates a lack of interest and equally distracting is when they get off topic. Sometimes you just have to mute the mikes and reset the conversation.

I've only participated in a couple Zoom calls, but Dave's comments and suggestions seem spot on to me. The term "herding cats" comes to mind.

True. I just figured Zoom might be a little more user friendly, for those who are less tech inclined. Signal is great though.
