Wanted to poll those of you that have or have not had better than average accuracy with a 500mm slug (or pellet) liner. Please note the projectile and velocities, this would be helpful info.
As for me, I went out today and did a second round of testing with the slug liner using my Taipan. The first time that I had it out, I had a problem that I attributed to projectile seating depth. Late that afternoon, I decided to try seating some deeper by hand, and my results improved. However, I discovered that at least my liner did not like longer projectiles, to include:
Fast-forward a month of so to today, I'm back out there again with a more powerful Taipan, and with a different barrel adapter. Unfortunately- the adapter that I was using was one that should have been scrapped! It was too long, only leaving a couple of threads on the end for my moderator(s). The result of that was bad turbulence throwing off my shots. The problem was worse with my Koi moderator (which has deep threading before the expansion chamber compared with the factory moderator). I had better groups with factory and the 5 shot group un-shrouded was real tight (H&Ns), so in my mind - the better accuracy un-shrouded confirms my theory. (Note - I did not want to shoot any more without a shroud, because my air tube was longer than the end of my barrel).
Anyhow - here are the projectiles that I believe to show the most promise with the velocities that I tested:
Here's what disappointed me:
20.2gr NSAs - I am HOPING that the flyers were just exacerbated by the short muzzle threading issue. It might make sense due to their tiny size, but they did not do too well (they didn't keyhole / tumble thankfully).
JSB Monster RDs - I shot these from ~880-940fps and they were by far the worst. Not a slug, but I do wonder if anyone has had success shooting them with a 500mm FX barrel
That's all that I have to report for now. I'd love to hear feedback from others!
