Anybody Painted the Stock on Veteran / Mutant?

That grain is pretty good on that ash one. Not a wood expert, so I wonder if it would take a stain very well.

I'll let you in on some insight. The 22 short vet got the ugly stock. My 25 short vet was beautiful.

Surprised to see a ash used as it requires a lot of grain filling to get flat and it is very heavy. Love the look of it though.

Well I finally did it. I started the stain process with sanding with some 220, then 320, and finished with 400.

As you can see I didn’t go very deep just enough off to show the lines and prepare the surface to take a stain. I picked up some Minwax #231 Gunstock color and started to apply. In between the first and second coat I wet sanded with 400, then just some towels and tack paper in between the rest.

Next comes the wipe on poly but I wanted to shoot so badly that I let it dry and am taking a break! I’ll post more pics soon!

I think I’ve decided to use some Rustolem textured paint on the entire thing for a durable and grippy finish. Just deciding on the color of Aged Iron or Deep Forest Green.

You can use 0000 steel wool and take the shine off then restain with a stain of your choice. IT's a ton of hours working the wood but easier than the stain removals unless you want to go to bare wood and start over. You should remove the stock from the frame.

Hi Sajor, I actually did the first suggestion with 400 grit and am mixing a couple colors. What do you mean by removing stock from frame? I had to rehang it so the rope didn’t touch stock too.

@txaggie, you should try flexi dip or plastidip, they have them in a few colors including camo and they peel right off whenever you want.
