Another scope down.... iron sights back on.

....this time my Leupold 6.5-20 EFR. Will not hold zero any longer. Groups at 25 yds. approaching two inches with no repeatability. On the way to Leupold for repairs, another twenty bucks spent for postage. No problem, put the open sights back on for now. This rifle is very accurate and I am at no disadvantage with out optics. This little plate was no challenge at 40 yds. off hand. I installed the small dot post with corresponding rear insert. That rotating leaf kept moving due to weak retainer spring. I made a little plastic spacer washer to tighten it up from moving. With this virus thing going on, not sure how long the EFR will be in Oregon.

"I think your gun is a ram?".....no, this is a spring piston gun.

Yo, this Leupold was purchased new by me in 1988. It has been on numerous rimfire and centerfire silhouette rifles. It has been worked hard and put away wet. The dual bias erector springs are most likely weak by now. The gun/scope combo was clover leaving at 25 yds. when first installed. All of a sudden I am missing easy shots on junk birds. To the bench I go for a test. Not good. All screws were properly tight. Did not try another scope. The 80 will group very tight at 25 yds. from the bench with the open sights.

Yep, I am sure this Leupold needs to see the doctor.

Seven08,

Just for your own info, check to see if your gloss Leupold 6.5-20 EFR is a Vari-XIII or VX-3? To my knowledge gloss scopes were Vari-XIII's. If I am correct the difference is single erector spring vs. double erector spring, which I've read affords 30% more holding power. My VX-3's both say "air rifle" on the gold ring around the bell.

You might inquire when you send your scope in.

I've had Vari-XIII's on an HW55, R7 and HW30 for thousands of shots without issue.

Good luck.

You are correct, the VX's have the improved strength springs. This is a Vari-X III model with no "air rifle" on the gold ring. The wood block 25 yd. rested group is why it was sent back. The steel 25 yd. rested groups are with the open sights. I placed a smaller 2.5" x 3.5" plate at 50 yards for a more challenging off hand target. Still was able to connect 80%. Do I really even need a scope? Yes, I want it back on ASAP.

Their custom shop is "out of service" for the time being. Last I heard reticle changes were running $200. (ridiculous.) It has the fine duplex which I really like and am used to. I will be happy to have it repaired as is. There is a possibility it may be replaced with a new scope, too. I left that up to them to decide.

I think your right. I've returned a Hawke and a Sig Whiskey3 ASP and in both cases I was sent a new scope. I really don't think they mess around with repairs all that much.

While waiting for the Leupold to come home.....I decided to temporarily pull another off a center fire rifle to mess around with. This one is a 6x-42AO matte target with medium duplex reticle. It will focus fairly clear down to 25 yds. I was hitting little stones as close as 15 yds. with usable clarity. Was getting tight little group clusters from the bench at 25 yds. Was too windy for any off hand shooting farther out. Maybe tomorrow.... The irons stay on for now.

Yo, my 6.5-20X Leupold EFR came home last week. They were able to repair it rather than give me a new one. The shop ticket showed a complete gutting and reassembled with the current erector assembly and stronger springs. All functions repaired and like new again. It will stay locked in my gun safe for now. No plans to put it back on the 80 soon. I am really enjoying the 80 with the factory open sights.

The 6x-42 was short lived on the 80 as shown above. I was not happy with the scope unable to focus under 25 yards.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the capability to make this Vari-X III better than it was.

Better than new! Congrats!

The custom shop reticles are kinda crazy priced!

The last 6.5-20x40 AO EFR done.
