Another Gopher Adventure

I set up early to get a gopher that was taking advantage of my few remaining plants. Travel cup of hot black coffee, "Gopher Gun" and shooting hide on porch, I was comfortable, caffeinated, and practicing my best Cat and Mouse impression.

It did not take long for the gophers to taunt me!!! I was prepared and prevailed in my morning pesting. Shots from 20 yards, 12 yards and 8 yards, I have a cheat sheet inside the flip up scope cap with all the various holdover/under points.

I put these guys out on a stump for one of my forest friends, a raven got all three.

Good luck with your pesting, stay healthy and safe

Mr. dizzums,

We have lived here 36 years and there are times like this once in awhile, this seems like it is going to be one of those years.

My Gamo Urban " Gopher Gun " with the Bug Buster side focus scope is like you said " that's what pcp's are for right there". It was my first step from powder burner to air power. I have accumulated several more pellet rifles and use them for ground squirrels and some night time rat pesting. I even found an air rifle to shoot arrows, great fun to have since my old shoulder can hardly pull a bow string anymore.

Good luck to your air gunning, stay healthy and safe

Mr. Boots and Mr. Ranchibi,

The cheat sheet was not my idea, I copied it from a forum member who should get credit for it, but my failing memory...

The Bug Buster scope may not be a top of the line optic, but for close in shooting it really shines, side focus wheel is pretty sweet too and flip up scope caps for my cheat sheet. I just bought another one for my son who has a ground squirrel terrorizing his back yard garden. It fits perfect on the Beeman rifle I gave him a few weeks ago with a red dot sight that was not bright enough. I am confident that squirrel won't be around much longer. His back yard would be a 30 yard shot tops, perfect for the Beeman and Bug Buster.

Good luck with your pesting, stay healthy and safe

Mr. crazyhorse,

This has happened to me too. I have changed my tactics to improve my hit ratio. Being an old guy, I have to get real comfortable (shooting chair), so I can be patient for the perfect shot (cat and mouse method). Thoughts of White Feather the sniper run through my mind. Plus I am not as steady as I once was, so off hand shots are out, I use an adjustable tripod to help. Sometimes nothing helps, but there will be another chance tomorrow, I do practice almost every day, using small objects the size of a gopher, (pill bottles) to make sure me and the rifle are as best as possible. I purchased an inexpensive rangefinder that I have with me too.

As you can tell, I obsess about these rodents destroying my plants and trees, I try my best to eliminate them.

Good luck with your pesting, stay heathy and safe

I can never seem to catch the little so and so's digging. Even when we do, they keep tight to the hole. Coming up just enough to toss some dirt.

Camping out on the hole or gassing them is the only way to get them. Gassing them works pretty well and I don't spend time sitting in a lawn chair with a rifle and irritating the people driving by on the main road.

That side focus wheel is one of the reasons I still keep my UTG 4x16 44 SWAT AO scope. It's so much easier to deal with than the front focus optics.

Mr. LostinTejas,

Yes I understand, the time in getting the perfect shot. I have no neighbors, to irritate or watch what I am doing. While I play the cat and mouse game I watch and listen to all that is going on around me, I sort of live in a animal sanctuary. A few acres of paradise for a crazy old retired guy, with a lot of time to hunt rodents.

Good luck with your pesting, stay healthy and safe
