Might be a dumb question, but I've never used alloy pellets. Are the alloys as soft as lead? And has anyone used them as a hunting application? If so how do they perform as a hunting pellet.......is the lead better for that application?

I have tried H&N green .177 pellets. My experience is that they shot well enough over distances of less than 20 yards. But over a greater distance they were less accurate. I decided to stay with traditional lead pellets.

Alloy pellets are generally harder than lead pellets. Haven't tried any for hunting. Might put that question in the hunting section for more responses.

Most alloy pellets I have used are harder then lead pellets and deform less on impact, which would mean less energy transferred to the target. Another thing I have noticed (at least in my rifles) is that multi-shot magazines index much smoother with lead and are less likely to jam. Something to consider when hunting. In all but one of my guns, the accuracy was close to or as good as lead, once I found the right pellet. For me, that was the H&N Baracuda Green 12.35 Grains in .22.

It kinda sounds as if there is no advantage to using alloy over lead from a performance alone standpoint.

I fully agree with you there. I only use alloys to avoid lead on my property when target shooting.I have found lead to be superior in all other aspects.
